I know what a SBC engine is, I know what a LT-1, LT1, LT4, LS1, LS6 all are. I also know what the many variations of the BBC engine are.
What's a SB2 and SB2.2? Ran across these in the GM Performance parts book. I am assuming they are the engine used in NASCAR racing, if so how do they different from the old SBC or LS1/LS6.

From off the top of my head I remember these big block Chevy engines. L78 396 L34 396 ( Later in Jan. 1970 factory bored out .032 to a 402) L89 396 w/aluminum heads L88 427 LS3 402 LS4 454 LS5 454 LS6 454 LS7 454 ZL1 427 Aluminum block,cylinder heads and intake I don't know what the Mark 5 big blocks (502 and Vortec 8100's are called)
I probably forgot a few more as well like the regular 427 in Impalas/Caprices and in the base Corvette. I want to say L35 427?

The SB2 is a 4" bore cast iron Chevrolet racing block .......... the SB2.2 refers to the second generation head design for this engine ........... these are the base engines used by all GM Nascar teams (each team, however, has its own "modification" secrets) ....... they differ from the LT1 in the head design and the main bearing splays .......... and they differ from the LS1 also by the fact they are not aluminum ........... these are racing engines only, not designed for passenger cars
SBC refers, of course, to the small block Chevrolet engines, of which there have been many ........... off the basic design brought out in 1955, the following small blocks have emerged
265 cu in 283 cu in 302 cu in 305 cu in 307 cu in 327 cu in 350 cu in 400 cu in
There also was a 262 cu in small block, but it was an entirely different casting and was not based on the standard Chevy small block design
There were many horsepower variants of each engine displacement

Will the SB2.2 heads bolt to existing SBC blocks. I know the intake manifolds and exhaust ports configurations are unique. Also know that this head and intake configuration requires a valley cover. What I want to know is - If I was building a race only engine and had access to a set of these heads, what block would I need??

Bob,
It's my understanding that you can use SB2 or SB2.2 heads on a production block ........... but you have to use a special camshaft and also use offset roller rockers and roller tappets
