OK, so I decide to visit the SS today & take her out for a spin. Haven't had her out since before Xmas. Ran around for about 30 mins to get her warmed up and get the fluids moving.
About a block before I get back to the storage unit, I decided to cruise around in the empty industrial park next to it. It's a good place to let her breath . At the last minute, I see a newer Mustang Cobra(that I didn't see ahead of me) jump out of traffic, cut in front of me, and turn in also. I guess he saw me coming.
Long story short(sort of), we let 'em rip.
I don't know much about the stang's, but this thing sounded turbo or super charged. Had a distinct whine going on as he nailed it. Definitly not stock! He couldn't take me, but I couldn't take him either. Both cars were kicking ass though. We turned around & did it again...same result. We just waved and went on our way. At least my stock 35th held her own .

Buddy, The 03 and 04 Cobra's are supercharged. I have an 03 now. I used to have a 2000 SS.
The Cobra's put out more power than the Camaro but they are heavier. On average the Cobra's put out about 360-370rwhp and the same for tq when stock. However, with a driver and a full tank of fuel they can weigh 3800 lbs!!
Once you start changing pullies on the supercharger and doing the other typical bolt-ons, the Cobra generally makes 420rwhp and can make up to 500rwhp if you get a little brave with the boost and blower porting.
I miss my Camaro's handeling and the low end torque of the LS1...something about it's powerband is awesome and classic. However, I'm confidant my Cobra will be much faster than my SS would have been even with the heads and cam I was planning.
Nice race...you were on your game for not driving it since Dec.

While it's nice to know about the SS holding it's own against a Cobra, the street's the wrong place for it to happen. Even in an industrial area. Here in PHX we've had several street racing deaths recently. Including a 40 yr old taking his 10 yr old to school at 8:30 in the morning. He wasn't doing anything wrong but died for someone else's fun.
Sorry for the soapbox. Actually, I'm not. I've got a kid and neices and nephews and friends and family and I don't want anything to happen to them because they were in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Its too bad Ford has to put a Supercharger on the Junkstang to even keep up with the SS. Just shows me they need help and can't do it on their own.
I just wonder if the SS is putting out more horsepower than they said. Posted by 2002Z4CSS (Member # 1393) on :
Remember that Ford had to install a supercharger on the Cobra just to beat a stock Z28. That does not impress me at all. Posted by Jim Mac (Member # 113) on :
Aw, sheeze, we all know that Ford had to cheat to make the Cobra anywhere near as fast as the SS and Firehawk.

Buddy,
Nice picture! Those two look great together.
Keep it safe!

Krista. I completely agree with your thoughts on this one. When I first read this thread that was the first thought that came into my mind. Why race on the street?? We have all heard the stories and should know about the consequences by now.

Boy, I haven't seen a good "Ford had to put a blower on the Cobra to compete with the f-body" debate in a while.

To say that GM had to use 5.7 liters to beat up on a little 4.6,that is cheating.

To me Cubic Inches is what makes a muscle car. All Ford has to do is put in the 5.4 or there own 5.7 if that is what the 351 is and match it toe to toe with the SS. A supercharger or turbocharger is cheating to me.
As far as cheating goes its Ford that is cheating not GM.

So if the Mustang isn't a musclecar because it only has a 281 cubic inch motor, is the 289 Cobra a musclecar?
If blowers or turbos are cheating, I guess GM cheated with the Grand National, the Grand Prix GTP, the Turbo TA, etc?

No, real cheating is putting a supercharger on your car because you can't compete against and fbody!
Posted by ws6wu6 (Member # 2134) on :
I wonder if GM did that to the vette to compete against the viper if that would be classified cheating.
Posted by TimeLord (Member # 1389) on :
By this logic, the SL600 is the worst offender in the world and you would not want one,V12 Twin Turbo faster than Vipers,Porsches,Ferraries,Lambos etc etc.
I'll cheat that way anyday!!!!

Of course it wouldn't... GM would just be trying to catch up to the Viper because Dodge cheated and added 2 cylinders to the motor.

I agree with all of Chabs posts.
This topic gets so old. They cheat, we cheat, who cares. Thats like saying that two guys with blowers (be it turbo or supercharger)the guy with the intercooler is cheating cause his forced air is cooler then a non intercooled car. Give it a break.
But then again, we MUST remember, out of the two cars, what car can you buy brand new at your local dealer? Posted by SteelHorse (Member # 1725) on :
GM cheated by withdrawing from battle when they heard the supercharged Cobra was coming out in 2003. Posted by Harry P (Member # 533) on :
I don't get it... What's WRONG with cheating?

Well, that's because Ford cheated in the first place, 'cause they couldn't compete with a NA engine, the slapped a supercharger on it.

If cheating weren't commonplace or encouraged,Smokey Unick, the Woods Brothers ,Roger Penske ,A.J.Foyt and nearly everyone who has ever raced would be in jail!!!!!! Posted by HOSS (Member # 1464) on :
If you're not cheating, then you're not trying.

I dont consider it "cheating" to install a supercharger. One of these days I would like to put one on my LS1 68 Camaro.
I think its just kinda funny that the mustang already had a DOHC 4 valve per cylinder engine that was nowhere close to the hp of an LS1. So THEN they put a supercharger on it. You would think that will all of that high dollar high-tech stuff on the stock engine, they could have gotten more hp from it. But then now that it has the s/c on it, it is a gas guzzler! Well, I have to admit, I don't spend much time here, and.......I didn't really mean to post & run, or to start a heated debate , but it does make for some intersting reading.
Listen up young-un's.....
As for the street racing comment's (Krista & Bill), you're right. It was a big "BRAIN FART" on my part. I'm a 40 something with kid's, and too many responsibilities to worry about, without doing that kind of crap. I'd hate to be the cause of someone's injury or death. It was pretty stupid, and there's no point....there's always somebody faster. I guess I'll have to get to the track & get that urg out of my system there.
I haven't driven the Z since Oct(it's in pieces in the garage still), and the SS since Dec...
Just had a mental laps...
As for the "cheating"......who cares!!! We all cheat. That's how we make 'em faster .

Buddy we all have been there and done that at sometime and I am glad to here a stock SS held its own which they always surprize alot of people as to how good a push-rod engine can run even now days. I was at a event this past fall of the year and a guy with a new Cobra thought he would show off taking on a SS rag top. After I beat him 2 times by about 5 cars he was carefull about looking for SS's to run. I guess I cheated also being as I have 410 RWHP and being a vert we weigh about the same. He could change pulleys and other things and then I could go turbo myself or put the spray back on and this can go on as long as your check book is big enough. Short of it I will keep my SS
