Since I'm a Geographer, I want to learn more about where everyone lives. What makes where you live special?

Vermont has maple syrup and is home to Ben & Jerry's. Wisconsin has cheese, but I'm looking for more.

I found a website that features State products, but I want to know about the lesser known, obscure stuff, too.

What is produced, grown or comes from your State or region that isn't readily accessible to the rest of the Country, that you'd be willing to bring to SSOA ThurSSday in Bowling Green, KY this year?

Example (off the top of my head):
Oregon produces Marionberries and 99% of the U.S. Hazelnut crop, but a special thing is Moonstruck Chocolate Co.

Dublin, Texas is home to the oldest Dr Pepper bottling plant and is the only one left making Dr Pepper from real Imperial cane sugar. (Just a bottle or two would give me a major fix.)

Chicago is home to most of the candy companies, but Boise, Idaho is home to a candy company that produces the Idaho Spud Bar and the Cherry Cocktail. (A wonderful sugar high, for sure.)

I'm sure you're getting the idea. I'm looking for products like Fluff, Moxie and other unique soft drinks or stuff I can't get where I live.

A couple of my favorite shows are Food Finds and Unwrapped. I've seen so many neat items on there, but I can't remember where they all come from.

My thought is to expand our horizons by bringing an item unique to your area to share with everyone at SSOA ThurSSday. This will give everyone an introduction to you and where you live.

If anyone has any requests, post them and let's see what we can gather and share with each other on the Back Porch in B.G.

Well, the #1 thing I can think of is Hershey's Chocolate . Its amazing how Milton Hershey's dream has evolved into a reality, making it (I belevie) the largest chocolate maker in the World. And to think, I live 20 minutes away!

Some other products that are home in Pennsylvania include Utz Snack Foods Which are based in Hannover PA, also about 20-30 minutes away. Also, try out Snyder's of Hanover which makes more snack goods (great Pretzels!) And since we're on line of food, check out Seltzer's Lebanon Bologna. Makes an EXCELLENT snack, or for parties. I've been there and took a tour on how they make and process it. Mmmmmmm....Oh and did I mention its only 20 mintues away as well??

Another treat would be a salad dressing from Gazebo Room. They were a little greek restaurant in Harrisburg and came out with their own salad dressing. Soon after, they closed their restaurants doors, but the Salad is BY FAR the #1 selling dressing. I use it at home mostly for marinating, etc. Even The present (of the USA) was introduced to it and shortly after ordered a few cases to be served in the White House. (wow, it's midnight and I'm getting hungry!!) note: you can order online, but looks like you can only order by the case...I might be able to set something up that I can go and get a few bottles and ship it to you.

And who can forget the infamous Pennsylvania Turnpike. Yes, only about 5 mintues from an exit there.

I cant think of anything else right now, and I KNOW there is sooo much more here in Pennsylvania. Heck I've only touched on central PA! Maybe I'll come up with more.

ENJOY EVERYONE!!! [Smile]

I can get Cape Cod Potato Chips

Martha's Vineyard Chocolate (can be mail ordered - even may have an internet site)

THings popular in RI are Crab cakes, Quahog's (very large clam that they gave a crazy name too) that they use in soups... I can get you some canned chowder from the local Newport restaurants here... they have all kinds of small soda companies here... Near where I live they have a microbrewery [Smile] and every Novemver they make a 10-13% alcohol beer [Eek!] (ask sneezy he loves the stuff [Big Grin] ) ( http://www.newportstorm.com )
plus many local cookbooks and books on the history of Newport,,, we have many, mansions, that if they were built today, would cost $250,000,000 that were onlky used 6 weeks per year in the early 1900's [Eek!]

as for bowling green it's a 2 day drive for me [Frown]

Hiram Walkers makes Canadian Club Whiskey here.

And, oh - we have Chrysler, Ford & Gm. But I
think you're thinking more along the lines
of Essex County Mushrooms! Supposed to be
the best around.

We still haven't received word that our brick was completed, so if you have a 12" x 12" piece of stone, bring it and we'll save the NCM the trouble of installing the one we paid for. [Roll Eyes]
