I washed babyT with his Zaino shampoo......dried him off with his nice fluffy white cotton towels.....but he seems GREASY.... [Eek!]

I don't want to Z-5 over the grease....yuck....so should I Dawn to get the grease off of him and then Z-5 him??? [Confused]

And where-t-f did the grease come from?? Is it cuz I have to drive thru a road construction site 15 miles twice a day.....road tar, asphalt, diesel fumes, and $hit....??? [Frown]

This "daily driver" stuff is a bummer..... [Mad]

Millie....have you used Zaino before?? If so then don't use Dawn because that will strip alot off...it's too harsh. Did you use fabric softner on your towels?? Can't think of where the grease would come from. Did you clay it??

Millie,

The greasy situation I can't help with. hopefully KenC'll pop in.

But I did want to address this:
"This "daily driver" stuff is a bummer..... "

I am soooooo glad mine is a daily driver. Every single day I get to experience the thrill and joy of driving American muscle. I can have the $hittiest day (yesterday for instance) and within about 30 seconds of dropping the top and putting the pedal to the metal I've got the biggest $hit eating grin on my face. I've always got something to look forward to after work. I wouldn't want to garage mine for part of the year. I bought it to drive and enjoy and come hell or high water that's exactly what I'm going to do. [Big Grin]

I have to agree. Using my SS as a daily driver can be a pain, 'specially since I put the headers on cuz of speed bumps, but it's been worth it just to put a shine on every drive! It's a lot of work but I've got 95K miles on mine and it still doesn't use a drop of oil between changes. Yea Mobil 1!! I bought it to drive it.

As for the greasy stuff Millie. Maybe it's that Texas crude that made the state so great...and put so many politicians in place.

Actually Flamin' Bird may have hit the nail on head with her comment about the fabric softener. That'll reduce the asorbancy of your towels and make the surface feel kinda greasy.

Posted by cytruffle (Member # 1733) on :

hmmmmmmm......y'all may be right on the fabric softener thing.....this is the first time I've used the towels since [Mad] SOMEONE [Mad] (who shall remain nameless) washed them with a couple of red shop rags and turned them pink.....and I'm guessing some fabric softener went into the mix as well.........(is murder against the law?)

He's had several coats of Z-5 & Z-2 & I claybarred him in the fall. He sat in the garage until about a month ago, when I lost "custody" of the Jeep.... [Roll Eyes]

And as for daily driver.....I heartily agree! Driving him is the high point of my day right now....it just makes me crazy that he gets soooo dirty....haven't adjusted to the "dethroning" from his "garage queen" status....err...."king".... [Wink] [Big Grin]

(I just hope those badazzzzz cars on our cruise tomorrow don't beat him up..... [Eek!] )

Posted by twobratSS (Member # 2180) on :

The Brat'll take up for him!

I'll almost bet it's the fabric softener. Missi puts it in everything, but if you read the label to towels closely, it says NOT to use fabric softener.

Millie, will you have time to wash him in the morning?

use some Z6 and you should be fine.

run all the towels thru the wash again before you use them.

I washed him tonite....just didn't put any Zaino on him....I'll look at him tomorrow a.m. & see what his deal is..... [Confused]

With your car being black be make sure the car is not to hot when you use the z-6, if you spray it on to large of an area and do not wipe it down quick enough it will also give you that smearing look. I spray the z-6 on my towel and then wipe the car in a small area, and then wipe that spot with a dry towel. A bit more work but it stops the smearing. Also you can do the same with bottled water to get rid of the smears. Hope this helps.

If you have to use Z6 in the sun, mix some Z6 with water, 50/50, and it won't streak. [Smile]

Posted by Cavy Dan (Member # 1352) on :

Hey Millie...dont get TOO spoiled driving 'him' every day like I took, adn dont take advantage of him [Wink] Do what Chris said and do a thorough Z6 on the car. If that doesnt help, maybe claying the car again will help out a lot (not sure what kind of grease we're talking about, but removes tar quite easily!) Then Z6 again. Maybe using some luke warm water next time you wash the SS will help. Just a few ideas. [Smile]

Posted by cytruffle (Member # 1733) on :

Great ideas!! I'd always just sprayed the Z6 right onto the car.....AND I've never mixed it with water....that makes sense! [Smile]

Thanks so much.....and aren't we gluttons for punishment with these black cars???? ...but don't they look purdy when they're all squeaky clean??? [Wink] [Cool]

Dan....it just smears when I run my finger across the finish....not road tar (yipes! [Eek!] )

So far....its worth having black! I wish it was warm enough so I can put on Zaino on my new Cavy. I feel helpless... [Frown]

I agree with the above statement that maybe the rags need to be rewashed and then put in the dryer with bounce or something equivalent. I have never had problems with smearing. [Big Grin]

Murder is a crime, unless in a heat of passion. I think if you get the right judge and jury, you can plea that course and get off. I agree with Krista, and that driving the baby every day is the greatest thing in the world!

rewash the towels in HOT water...once with detergent...then run 'em thru again without any detergent.....OR...better yet, run 'em thru with Calgonite (this removes any detergent residue.....you'll be surprised at how much sudsing you get ...)

As to the grease....yes, you MAY be getting it off the road surface....also, if you are parking on asphalt...esp. relatively new asphalt, the sun will release some petroleum based 'stuff' and it will adhere to the paint....also, you'll probably note that concrete roads have 'dark' spots where the tires have contacted the roads (no, not burnout stripes)..well...that's tire residue and grease/oil from other vehicles...and when it gets wet, it emulsifies and will of course, leave residue on the paint.......

LMAO!! I think the route I'm taking will, in the long run, be less messy....and his son will still have a father...!! [Wink]

I park on concrete, but I-30 is being rebuilt and it seems like they're slinging tar & asphalt everydamday.... [Mad]

I will definitely rewash the towels as per your suggestions....thank you, sir! [Smile]

The Z6 worked like a charm!! He looked almost as good as the other two cars I was with! [Wink]

When you wash, you may want to use powder detergent instead of liquid detergent. The instructions I have read for ski wear (I know Millie has NO idea want ski wear is [Big Grin] ) all say to never use liquid detergent. It leaves a residue that coats the fabrice and destroys the "breathability" of the fabric.

Posted by SSSupercar (Member # 1990) on :

From Zaino's "Towel Guidelines":

You must use only white. Not colored towels..... colored towels are not to be used because the dye leaves a chemical residue on the paint finish. Always wash your towels first before using. Use Liquid detergent and rinse twice.

When washing your towels. Only use Liquid detergent such as All or Tide, etc. Do not use Bleach, Powdered Detergents or any kind of fabric softner. They will leave a chemical residue on the towels which will transfer to your paint finish. Make sure to run rinse cycle twice to remove all detergent.

Another thing that I don't think was mentioned....

When you mix that Z-6 with water, make sure it's DISTILLED. That ensures no minerals, chemicals, etc.

I wonder if the dye from the shop rags could have left a residue in the towels?? [Confused] I may just have to buy new ones.... [Frown]

Thanks for the info!

Great post! This has been a good thread even if it was started at Millie's expense.

I use only liquid detergent on my towels. After two summers (about a years time of use) I would not call them soft anymore. I don't use them for drying the car, just rags basically.

*sigh* now I'm off to the basement to stare at my box of Zaino bottles until the end of April [Frown]

I'll throw in my 2 cents worth.

Never use a powdered detergent, only use a liquid, without additives such as softners. NEVER use any kind of softner, not even the fabric ones you toss in the dryer.

As Scott mentioned, use hot water to wash them and run them through again without using soap. I actually do it twice just to make sure there is no soap residue left. Don't dry the towels completely on heat, I leave mine slightly damp and then run them through the air fluff (no heat) cycle until dry.

Mixing the Z-6 50/50 with distilled water only does make it easier to use. You can also spray it on the towel instead of the surface which will further decrease the streaking, especially on a hot surface.

The Dawn will not remove the Zaino, however it does affect the slickness of it. Rewash with the Z-7 and then Z-6 and it should be back to normal.

What you can pick up from everyday driving can definitely mess with the surface. An everyday driver should also have an occassional light claying to help remove the contaminants you pick up every day.

ZAINO!!!!! [Big Grin]

Good towels, Millie, is the key to keeping the SS nice and shiny with now scratches. Remember, its teh towels that are coming in contact with the paint. Its pretty sad I spend more money on the towels for my CAR than on ME. And the ones for the car are soooo nice!!! [Big Grin]

Another thing no one mentioned:

When we put the Zaino on too thick, it made a smeary mess. Once we got it taken care of with some Z-6, a thinner coat of Z-2 was all it took to not experience it again. Sparingly is tough to do!

I agree- when I apply Zaino now, I seem to have more 'left over'. When I first started using it, I would have to mix up more just to finish a coat. All you need it to apply a very thin coat, any more and it ends up in the towel.

Posted by biSScuit (Member # 2030) on :

When I apply now, sometimes I worry that I'm applying too thin b/c I can see it in some areas, and others I can't even tell it's there until it hazes over ... and that's on a black car! One thing I am going to try next time is spreading out my "blob" of zaino across the applicator before applying, then I should be able to get evenly thin coats. Actually I found on the Zaino site where it recommends spreading the polish "like butter on bread" before applying to get it even.

Posted by Kevin V 2002 SS (Member # 1025) on :

An experienced Zainoholic can apply an entire coat to an F-Body with 1/2 oz. or less. It is normal to barely be able to discern where you applied it until it hazes.

Keeping the applicator moist makes it MUCH easier to get the polish spread evenly. You want to keep the pad moist. When I first get started I apply several drops around the pad and fold it over on itself to get it spread into the pad, similar to the buttering suggestion. Also if you Z-6 before applying the polish it makes it easier to spread as well. Applying it on a cool surface also makes it easier.

Which one are you using that hazes over?? I have used Z2, Z5, both alone and mixed with ZFX and I can never tell where I've put it and where I haven't. (black car) (lousy eyesight)

I think I'm using too much.....
