My daughters 1999 Z24 Cavailer just threw a Service Engine Soon light on. It was checked to have a P0440 Trouble code. What is the meaning for the code and what should I look for? Thanks! I have no GM shop maunal for that car. Posted by Big A (Member # 1761) on :
I don't no if this will help because this is for 2001-02 Camaro. PO440 has to do with the (EVAP), Evaporative Emission system having a total blockage or a large leak. Monitors vacuum from the (FTP), fuel tank pressure sensor. I think emissions are covered by a five year warranty reguardless of the new car warranty. I would check on this to see if it is covered. You could have a bad sensor or a vacuum leak.

Yeah, that car is still under the 5 year emissions warranty. Maybe the gas cap is not tight. I will look at it this weekend. Yesterday I recieved a GM Recall Notice in the mail for an ignition switch. If I con't fix it at home it has to go to the dealer anyway. Thanks!

P0440 is a gross evap system leak, and is MOST LIKELY caused by the gas cap not being put back on tight. Keep in mind, even if you go and retighten the cap, the light wont just turn off. Greg I know its not a good thing to do but sometimes when its really really cold here in the morning I leave company trucks running to warm up while I fill them with gas and then the light comes on because I had them running for awhile with the gas cap off

No, Auto Zone does not check for free. Atleast not in California. Plus I dont trust many people that read the codes there. I work there,and when it comes to trouble shooting mil lights, most people dont know squat. I will look in to it today and see what I come up with.
PS usually I know squat, but will tell you when I dont.

O, and that recall notice. If you try to start the car for 5 minutes, it may catch on fire. Not out in the drive way for half an hour turning the key for a few seconds every once in a while, but auctally the key in the start position for 5 minutes strait. The things people do to poor chevys. Tear

Autozone DOES read codes for free in MI. I've had them check it on my S10 before and on my Fiancee's Sunfire several times. Most of the morons that work there are useless when you ask what it means but I have had a couple people know what they're doing. My Fiancee just had the recall done on her 98 Sunfire. They put in a relay at the starter so that high current doesn't flow through the ignition switch and cause a fire. I'm just looking to sell the car now. She got a new one Friday.
