So get this...I'm on my way home on a wet Friday night, cruising at 60mph in the left lane, right next to some of those handy concrete barriers when my left rear tire blows out. Luckily, it didn't upset the car much and I was able to make my way to the shoulder on the right side of the road. I didn't have a camera with me so I can't show you the sight I got to see, but here are some pics of it in my driveway.

 -

The rest of the tire even caught up with me...
 -

My wife was driving ahead of me at the time so she continued home and grabbed one of my track wheels and jack. The car's a little too dirty to tell, but it doesn't look like the tire scuffed any paint so it's just a matter of replacing the wheel and tire. So if anybody has a painted 10 spoke they want to get rid of, let me know.

Cy

OMG!! That is crazy!! glad you kept it under control and are safe...you might also want to lok into getting allignment as well with the wheel hitting the pavement like that (event though our tires are low profile)

Any possibilty why it happened? Cover it under warranty? Tire company?

Hey Cy,
I'm really glad to hear that you came out of it unscathed! I've been thru the experience of blowing a rear tire at 60 mph and I remember that heart-going-into-my-mouth feeling like it happened yesterday! And this was 35 years ago in a '66 Pontiac convertible. I'm very happy that it wasn't a front tire that blew! I was on a single lane country road and it was all I could do to keep the thing from going into the ditch on either side. Just damned lucky there was nobody coming the other way or it would have been head-on city!

Best regardSS,

Elie

Good job not wrecking! Can that wheel be saved? Doesn't look too badly damaged, is there a shop that can straighten out the dent and polish her out?

Glad you kept the car under control. You insurance company may pay to replace that tire and wheel if you hit a chuck hole that caused the blow out. [Frown]

Glad you are OK.

Glad to hear you and the car are okay! I'd at least look into what (if anything) your insurance company can/will do for you!

Glad the car is ok. Had a Fiero I know what a tire can do to the 1/4 panels .

i have a write up on handling a blow out. it used to be on our home page. i checked..its not there now. i have it at work on WordDoc. ill post it tomarrow. i spent a week in the desert in Nevada with Michelin at their blow out school....driving everything from tornados to a kenworth tractor..and controling a blow out set off on the tire with explosive charges. you might find the story interesting. it saves lives.

Thanks everyone. I was really surprised how well the car remained composed...it never once felt like I was going to lose control. I too am glad it wasn't a front, especially on the left side...I just got done fixing that fender last summer.

I cleaned up the tire and looked a little closer. It looks like something may have punctured the inner sidewall. Whatever happened, it happened fast...I'd guess less than 3 seconds from the time I felt it go until I heard the rim on the asphalt.

I've thought about contacting my insurance company but it's not worth it with a $500 deductible. BTW, they're the stock Goodyears with a little over 22,000 miles on them.

Damn Cy, luckily no damage. Hope you find a replacement pretty quick.

That is exactly what happened to me about 2 years ago!! Same tire...rear left side and right about the same mileage!!!!! Weird!!! Ended up replacing all of the tires!!

That blows! No pun intended. Ironically, with nearly the same mileage, my RIGHT rear tire went flat about a block from the house.

Good luck to you and glad no one was hurt and the car was saved as well.

Yikes! Glad to see the damage was minimal under the circumstances.

Nasty dent in the rim, but it looks like you have a nice hose holder for the new house now. [Big Grin]

I just remembered yesterday that I got suckered into buying this CarePoint package when I bought my car and thought there was something about it covering tires. Sure enough, it covers both tire AND wheel damage...but only to 24 months or 24,000 miles, whichever comes first. DOH! I'm under the 24,000 miles but well over the 24 months...crap.

Sounds like superior driving skills to me.

Glad you and the SS are OK. A tire failure at speed can sure ruin your day!!!!!
