The US has made Nissan exempt from the fuel economy standards.

The article is a little difficult to understand but I think they are allowing them to combine all cars sold in the US into one group as far as computing fuel averages. They really aren't exempt from the required average MPG as I read it. And I guess I don't understand why the other automakers are opposing this. Like I said the article isn't written too well IMHO!

While I agree it is poorly written I know what they are talking about as its been in the Detroit Rag (automotive news) here recently... Anything produced on this content counts as made here... and the EPA sets different rules for "domestic" vs. "import" autos on fuel economy.... Nissan isn't totally exempt from fuel economy they are just playing a game. What it does do is allow Nissan to unfairly meet fuel economy CAFE (corporate average fuel economy). Because the mexican car is classified as an import it helps the CAFE for all of nissians "imported" vehicles.... the beef is if you sell it here you should have one CAFE for a manafactures entire line of vehicles not one for imports and one for domestic produced vehicles.... hope that clears it up... not sure if I explained it well myself.

Nope, because it only applies to the "imported" cars so if for example GM only imports one vehicle the dawewoo's it will only help other "imported" GM's not the domestically produced stuff... since GM only "imports" one other vehicle the GTO it won't effect the trucks etc. Currently only Nissian is the only maker to get an exemption.....

It will become generalized as usual, they will complain[big 3] and they will be included.

GM "imports" 3 daewoo, one holden and god knows what else,so maybe the DW will offset the LS powered Holden.

Uhhh 3 dawewoo... what plant are you from... the only 2 that I'm aware of are the 4 and 5 door aveo... that and the Goat. The other GMDAT (GM Daweoo Auto tech) cars are badged as suzuki's. The real benefit to GM would be to help on its truck fleet... but they are all "domestic" all those daewoos will mean nothing since they are only going to bring over 15,000 goats AND the next version will be built here.....

Canada gets the Chevrolet Aveo, Epica & Optra and the Pontiac Wave (Aveo) from Daewoo. Suzuki and Kia (I believe) will also be marketing them here.

I think the US only gets the Aveo.

Canada will also be getting a Pontiac Badged Chevy Cobalt ..which the US may not be getting.

Seems that Canada likes their cars at least 1 size smaller than the US ...we're getting the Smart fortwo this fall, the US is not. [Razz]

The supposed reason for this fleet split is to force manufacturers to maintain full line production in NA ...not just the the big dollar gas hogs.

IMO the whole CAFE thing is a big joke ...the PT Cruiser is a truck [Roll Eyes] My definition would be really simple ...a truck can tow 5,000 lbs.
