You win! You were the 1st closest answer.
I was talking to a co-worker on Friday and for some reason I mentioned that I will be needing a riding mower. He replied that he had one that was burning oil and needed to get it out of his yard. I asked how much he wanted for it and he replied "Come and get it and its yours"! Now with buying a new home and all of the cash that is going out...with a price like that I could not refuse. I told him to wait 2 weeks until I move and I will pick it up.Than I thought what if he changes his mind? I picked it up on Friday night, full of mud, leaves, dead battery and 2 flat tires. Looked like it sat where it stopped! I naturally detailed it before I was to diagnose it. I jumped the battery and it cranked. The fuel tank was full of rust. I cleaned it out and finally got it to fire for a short time. Gas was actually comming out of the crankcase breather and back up into the carb until it would stallout. That black smoke was what the owner thought was burning oil. I took the carb apart, cleaned the spark plug, replaced the air and fuel filter and drained about a 1/2 gallon of gas from the engine oil. The mover started right up and stayed running great! I tried to cut the lawn and a belt smoked when I engaged the blade deck. I removed the deck and freed up one of the blades that was not turning from a dry bearing. Put it all back together and actually cut my lawn yesterday. All for a few hours of labor and $36.71 for parts. I charged the battery over night and it seems to still be good! Man I was excited to save well over a $1000 right now. My son likes to ride it because it will pull a 2" wheelie! Glad I did not wait 2 more weeks to get it. Now do I tell the previous owner I actually cut my lawn with it for little money? [Big Grin] [Cool]

I went for the John Deere. I had an old Craftsman with a 6 spd, but for this I decided the automatic was better suited...I can hold my beer and not worry about shifting [Smile]

Sure, thanks! I will take it. My push mower is a 1988 John Deere center bagger with a 5 speed trans with clutch and has a clutch for the blade too. That way it stays running when you release the handle. So do you want me to pick up the mower or do you want to drop it off at the new house? [Cool]

Nice detailing.

Thank your co-worker and let him know that knowledge and sweat equity turned it back into a working mower. [Smile]

I thought about waxing it but Kathy said it is just a lawn mower. I did wipe it down with the gas/oil mix that came out of the crankcase just to give the paint some oil. It was actually dull and faded. I forget to dress up the tires! [Big Grin]

Speaking of exhaust...most small cars like a Honda Civic's don't even have a tailpipe a big as the mower!

I have some 35th Anniversary LE rear hatch stripes that won't fit my convertible.I was going to use them on my new rural route mail box but they may look better on the tractor! [Cool]
