I know that a fair number of people on this board live within a "reasonable" driving distance of St. Catherines, Ont. and might be interested in participating in this event. I have attended the last 2 years and it is simply an awesome day!
The date for this is Wednesday August 4.
The event is the 50th Anniversary Celebration of GM's St. Catherines Glendale Ave. engine plant.
The event this year involves a plant-wide "Open House" with tours of the plant and hopefully a stop at the in-house Dyno Lab (this was offered last year as well).
This plant builds the Gen III LS1 & LS6 engines, the Gen IV LS2, the 3.6 L V6 for the CTS as well as the Gen III LS1-based aluminum truck engines (5.3, 5.7, 6.0). Rumour has it that this plant will also be building the engine for the new GTO when it is manufactured domestically.
Local GM oriented car clubs (GTO club, Chevelle Club, Olds Club, Ontario Camaro Club, Toronto F-body Motorsports etc.) are invited to attend and participate in the annual Show 'n Shine that takes place throughout the day on the grass, across from the plant. The only requirement is that your car has a GM powertrain! Last year was the biggest and best yet with acres of eye candy to drool over and this year's event looks to be shaping up as being even larger!
Ron Fellows has committed to attend again this year (after a 1 yr. absence) Ron is an extremely personable guy and is always ready to talk cars with anybody who is interested! 1 or 2 "mystery guests" may also put in an appearance as well.(still TBD!)
So bring your Zaino and a lawn chair - BTW, there is no charge to register and participate. Bring a few (Canadian)bucks or a credit card as GM wearables and souvenirs have been available in the past in the vendor tent at discounted prices. Last year there was a DJ, and hot dogs and drinks were available. There were engine displays and plant staff on hand to answer questions and discuss etc. Trophies are awarded as well.
If you would like to register and are not affiliated with a participating club, I've been asked to compile individual registrations for this event.
To register, it is important that you send a PRIVATE E-MAIL to me garfin@ca.inter.net with the following info:
1) Name and full mailing address
2) Year, Make and Model of vehicle and licence plate #
3) # of guests (names are not necessary)

Note: For the plant tour, adequate footwear must be worn - full leather shoes with a heel no higher than 1" and no open toes or heels. No running shoes will be allowed in the plant. Safety glasses and hearing protection will be provided.

This has been a fantastic day the last couple of years and it keeps on getting better! Let's have GM sit up and take note of the enthusiasm that we have for our F-bods!

Best regardSS,

Elie

Good stuff John - hope you guys can make it! Keep me posted. It would be awesome if this could be done on the weekend, but I don't know how they'd be able to handle everybody for the tours in one day!

Best regardSS,

Elie

There was an EXCELLENT article about St. Cath., titled, Power Plant - Behind the Scene's at the St. Catherines Engine Assembly Plant.

Vette Magazine (whatever that is [Razz] ) May 2002

Many of you probably have it. Great pics.

I think it's as old as I got it off of SLP's forum.

Oh Shirt! Are you in, dude? [Big Grin] [Eek!] [Big Grin] Am I gonna have to boogey on down to Windsor to convoy back up to St. Kitts with ya? (Geez, I guess somebody's gonna have to show you the way in, man! Eh? [Big Grin] )
Seriously though, we are already workin' on some downhome Canuck hospitality for this one! I'm really hoping that your schedule will allow you a bit of leeway for this!!
I know that you have been there for me before on this one and I have no words in my vocabulary to express my gratitude and thanks to you for your support. You know what I'm talking about!! [Cool]

Best regardSS,

Elie

Hey Tom,
Welcome to the Back Porch! Kick your shoes off and stay awhile! [Cool] You'll meet a whole bunch of fun, upbeat and caring people here - who all happen to be F-Bod crazy! You'll fit in here just fine!
Tom is probably a bit too modest (or shy?) [Wink] to introduce himself formally so for those who might not know, he is one of this event's organizers at the St. Catharines engine plant. He's the guy who does a phenomenal job doing a lot the backroom and behind the scenes work to put it all together. Also he's probably the only guy who manages to get his own 3 Camaros in the show as well! [Big Grin]

Best regardSS,

Elie

I agree about the weekend show but unfortunately, It cannot be guarranteed the plant will be running on the weekend and since the Plant Tour is a major part of the Show & Shine and this years 50th. Anniversary celebrations the event is held during the week to ensure tha plant is running....unless of course there is a power failure like last year. Tom

Welcome to the board, Tom. Looks like I might be able to be there, as well.

Are you going to the OCC Nationals in June?

Hi John! You betcha! I've been going for 15 years, only missed the first one. See you there! Tom

Ohh, ohh, me, (hand waving in air) I have a question!

I've noticed the following about the newer small block engines:

Size Bore Stroke
(L) (mm) (mm)
4.8 96 83
5.3 96 92
5.7 99 92
6.0 101 92

Are there any plans to make an engine with the 6 liter bore and 4.8 liter stroke?
Seems to me this could result in a high RPM small displacement screamer like the legendary Z28 302.
This would be a great option for a future Camaro!

You want to rephrase that? A liter is a measurement of volume.

Let me rephrase (I know what a liter is [Wink] ).

Are there any plans to make an engine with the 101 mm bore and 83 mm stroke?

Is that better?

With regards to your question,..... I don't know the answer but I am sure if you come to the Show & Shine someone there may be able to answer that. Tom

Posted by Y2KSS1363 (Member # 1564) on :

I won't be able to make it, kinda far from SoCal.

I posted the question here in hopes someone who is going can ask and post the answer.

Posted by Tom (Member # 2281) on :

It is not that far... Last year we had a gentleman from California at the show... but come to think of it, he did win the distance award. If I can find out the answer, I will let you know. Tom

Thought I'd bring this TTT since the event is only a couple of weeks away and it may have slipped some peoples' minds that it is still not too late to register! If you think you might be interested in attending, check out the info in the first post of this thread. I know that John and Karen are on board for this one and it looks like it will be a really great day.
A group of us F-bod fanatics are also looking at heading over to the home of one of our club members for a BBQ after the event or out to a restaurant for dinner. Heck, you never know who might show up to one of these informal gatherings [Big Grin]

Best regardSS,

Elie
