is going out!!! Started whining Saturday before our club was meeting to go on a long cruise. I didn't go...didn't want to risk it going out.
Has anyone here replaced the power steering pump and if so, is it hard to do??? Can overfilling the power steering cause it to go out? and NO, I was not the one to overfill it!!!! My hubby did! Posted by SS_CarGuy (Member # 2065) on :
It may be your power steering rack rather than the pump itself. Kind of hard to diagnose over the internet. And if the reservoir is a bit too full, that shouldn't affect anything. But why did you add fluid to begin with? Was it too low?
The only other thing I can suggest is something I have done in the past to "bleed" air bubbles (which can cause the whining you are hearing) is to turn your wheels all the way to the left.....hold that for a moment....and then all the way to the right. Do that several times and if it seems to help you may have air in the system if you let the fluid get too low. Air bubles may take awhile to work their way out completely but then again if you were low on fluid, there must be another reason for that.

It was low. My husband filled it, ok....overfilled it. We sucked out some of the fluid....got the level where it should be. We did turn the wheels all the way to the left and all the way to the right several times. The whining went away. I have always had to add power steering fluid since the car was new...never very much and not all of the time...but, more than I thought that I should have to.
Thanks for the input! I'm wondering if it was just some air bubbles....will have to take him out and drive him and see if the whining comes back.

If you have to keep adding power steering fluid, there is a small leak somewhere in the system. Maybe a line, hose, rack, pump or reservoir leak.

Underneath the engine in the front between the two front tires. You'll see it. Big aluminum tube looking thing. Check the fittings and other areas around there for signs of fluid seepage. If still under warranty....

Adding power stearing fluid every once in a while is normal, but excessive is signs of a problem.

Be glad to get it fixed now than have it go out on the way to BG. Just hope it's not the Rack. That'll hurt the wallet a little.

Why would this be normal? I have owned vehicles with well over 150,000 miles and the power steering fluid was always at the full mark and never did I have to add any.

I have read many places that burning powersteering fluid is normal. Not much, but enought to have to add a little bit every year.
