Interesting! I live near a place called Hines Park that Henry Ford used in the early Ford Motor Company days and has the Rouge River running thru the park. Each of the Ford plants had their own water powered generator. Most of these building still exists and you can see the channel that was made to turn the turbine. Some of the plants still have the original generator.

This is not that unusual. Electric companies have to buy back any excess electricity that is produced by customers. A friend of mine has a farm in PA and has a couple of gas wells on it. He uses one of them to produce electricity and sells back the surplus.

My parents installed solar panels on their house (and no, you can't see them from the ground at all), and they work really well. We live in Palm Springs, CA, and it's always sunny and hot, and with the recent blackouts, I think it's a great idea. Their electricity bill from SoCal Edison was $0.00 for last year (but they pay like $5 for hookup and all per month).
