The car is a 5 speed, TPI G92 with the 9 bolt rear. Since you guys were very helpful when I pulled it out of storage, thought I post another problem: The car was in storage for 2 1/2 years and it runs fine BUT when I am moving slow (less than 10 MPH) or decelerating, there is an occasional nasty metal on metal clanking sound. It is worse when the car is in an incline/decline position. It sounds like metal on metal that is clanking...and when decelerating, it sounds like something is still spinning and slowing down out of sync and hitting another metal part along the way. Accelerate and the problem goes away. I am hoping the driveshaft is just banging against the tranny or undercarriage. Any thoughts? Mechanic inspected the bottom, but found nothing loose. He thought it might be the gears, but when I felt it this morning in traffic, I felt a vibration in the shifter with the clanking sounds...it was out of gear. Oh yeah, this usually happens with the car OUT of gear and in neutral...as I slow to a stop. More prevalent after driving on the highway. When I hit the gas, sometimes I hear a clank too. Any thoughts? Or, any thing I should listen for so I can give a better description? Thanks!

Catalytic converter? Maybe one is rattling internally.

You may have a tight u-joint from all of the time the car sat. You may want to remove the driveshaft and check the u-joints.

This could be a pilot bearing issue where the transmission input shaft is supported by the end of the crankshaft.
This sounnds a lot like a problem I had with my car. Similar type of noises and when it ocuured.....mostly at low speeds and de-cel. It turned out to be an input bearing failure in the tranny which also took out the pilot bearing and input shaft in the process. It was nasty.

If you are decelerating with the clutch pedal pressed, the drive shaft drives the gears. If in neutral, the gearset will slow its rotation. Sounds like something is loose when not under load.

Thanks folks! Car did not make the noises today...but they were nasty yeaterday. We'll see what tomorrow brings and I will go through every item you folks mentioned as soon as i have some extra time. At times, something is not right when the car is not under load. We'll see. I'll start with the tranny mounts, u-joints and cat (I don't think it is the cat), hopefully it is one of those three things.

kinda sounds like the tranny is shifting on the mount. its a cheap easy replacement so it cant hurt to swap it out anyway even if thats not the problem Posted by 01ss87iroc (Member # 1763) on :
