I cracked my original LS1 block. Since then I bought a new block and had the engine rebuilt. I'm curious. Is there any reason to keep this block. For instance, on my 67 Chevelle SS convertible if I had the original engine it would be worth a lot more. I know there is no exterior "pad" where the numbers are, however, I believe behind the timing chain cover and on the back of the engine are some date codes. They can't be seen really. I plan on keeping this car for a long time. Do I want to have my original block repaaired and resleeved and eventually put it back to stock in the years to come to make it original?

I know with the old Vettes the block number was a sub set of the VIN. I don't think the newer stuff is tied that closely. There might be different castings for early LS1s? And we know that some LS6 blocks made it into some late production Fbodys. AS long as it is the correct vintage I would guess you're fine and there is no way to tell otherwise.

Yeah all the old stuff had a VIN subset number in the stamping in the block. I don't care if it has a LS1 or LS6 block. I'm just wondering if it's a good idea to get this engine together again sometime?

If you have room to keep it it would not hurt to hang on to it just in case but I know there is a number at the back of the block at the top casting maybe

Yes I have room in my shop along with the heads. Anybody know how to decode any of the block numbers?
