Car News briefs: Could new Camaro be coming?
By AUTOWEEK

Camaro coming?

Faced with the imminent introduction of an already highly praised all-new 2005 Mustang this fall and nothing in the showroom to do battle with it, General Motors is eyeing a return to the pony car wars. So says Chevrolet general manager Brent Dewar when asked about plans for a future Mustang fighter. Says Dewar: “We’re working on that. We’ll have a competitor.”

We’ll see.

Right.... [Roll Eyes]

If it's true, then what are they waiting for? If it will compete in the '05 MY it should be around already building excitement, via shows, sneak photos, ads, etc.

Oh! Maybe they'll rebadge the Holden yet again, this time with a bowtie.

But will it look like a Cavalier....

It's called the Corvette !!!!

A 2005 would almost have to be in production now,,,stop reading between the spaces!!!!!

It may come back, someday 3-4 years down the road!

Like I said on the other board...GM's response was the cava...err....GTO...

and....

"I'll believe it when I see it!"

The caveat here is he didn't say WHAT or WHEN.....so we will just have to wait and see. It's unlikely that there will be anything in the 2005 model year regardless.

Becasue he can't talk with his hands tied ...and on these things they're tied pretty tight.
Which is unfortunate, I wish GM would let us know what they are planning instead of all the cloak and dagger stuff. I know Scott would enjoy telling us and we would certainly enjoy listening. [Wink]

I know some of the stuff has legal ramifications with respect to labor contracts, but if we could just share some of the dreams... [Cool]

Well Fbodfather keeps telling us to keep the faith not a guarantee but some hope and we don't listen. The new GTO will not be it just because it runs well and may handle good it just does not have the look for a poney car battle. Cindy likes the new GTO which would be a good daily driver for her. The new vette I like alot but if I had one of those I would still drive the SS because of all the friends it attaches me to and I met because of it. When I had a Vette no one would come up to me at a gas station to talk about it or cars like they do with the SS. We will wait and hope. [Cool]

This reminds me of the time a PR person from GM started talking about how fcar drivers could start using Grand Prix GT's as a replacement, for "high performance driving".

No offense intended toward GP drivers, but an fcar, it is not.

I still like the GTO and if I could afford to get one right now I probably would. And teh 05 Model year its supposed to have a couple of new options, some type of ground effects, hood, wheels, etc...Sounds good to me.

I hope Chevy gets a replacement soon. Cause right now I am looking to have to add a Pontiac Tattoo to go with my Chevy tat I have. [Razz]

It will NOT happen in the 2005 model year.

There are many reasons why we're not talking...(as I've stated at least 207,564 times in the past) and you can read about them in my book in a few years. [Big Grin]

And for the 207,565th time.....have faith.

you say keep the faith the pattern I see is that some other car manufacturer comes out with good competition , and GM seems to always be caought with their pants down, and reacts 2-5 years later with their answer to the competition .

Please tell me for once that GM is leading the race to bring us cheap power at a great price vs always playing catch up

I see GM in the same boat they were in 1964 1/2 ... when the mustang came out... it took them 2-3 years to even muster a response (1967 camaro)

I am not trying to be a pessimist, but please tell me that GM is leading and not playing its eternal "catch-up" game with their competion?

Yeah I can't wait what will come out in a few years [Big Grin]

question;; will GM finally learn to advertise, this new unmentionable model, or are they re-using the same marketing experts they used for the 97+ F-body platform ( duriong that time advertising was almost nonexistent [Frown] )

I have the faith, but I would sure like to see GM leading for a change [Smile]

It was still allowed to die a ignoble death, whereas Ford did what it had to to preserve the Mustang.

But then GM still has the Vette and Ford has buried the T-Bird for the 3rd time!!!!! [Wink]

I've lost faith, but then again since I'm not GM loyal I don't care. You can spend your whole life waiting or you can go buy something and have it NOW and be happy!

I'm sure PART of the reason is that they want to keep it hush hush so that competitors such as Ford wont be able to 'keep up' with GM and release a car very near the unveiling of a new GM car in that segment. Gives GM the advantage. [Wink]

Good point. If you're not loyal, your options are widened considerably.

However, we still hope to have and enjoy our Camaros for a few more years. We're happy now! I'm not hurting for a performance rush. When I need that, I just grab the keys and get in my GM car! I can wait for GM to truly come up with something that is a real musclecar again. Not some rebadged Cavalier-looking import. C'mon, even with the LS2....I mean anyone can make a turd go fast, but can it look fast even when stitting still? I know I can't deal with buying a turd-mobile, no matter how fast it is. I'd like to see the GTO do well, but that body style is KILLING it. They'd probably have been better off to pop a Monte body on the frame. At least it LOOKS fast. And it's recognizable from NASCAR exposure at least.

I'm kinda sentimental. I grew up in a GM-employee family and call it brainwashing or whatever, they've taken care of my family and my dad for nearly 50 years now, during his employment and his retirement. GM retirement benefits are what I have come to known over the years as the standard, and all the places I've worked has come up a bit short to GM benefits. Not that it should have any bearing on your brand choice, but although I will probably always have a GM car or truck in my garage because of it, kind of like my dad's legacy and my developmental years. I'm always going to give them a first look, but I'm not going to necessarily limit myself to only owning GM.

One of the best car commercials ever... [Cool]

I still say...the lack of advertising killed the
Camaro/Firebird. Marketing 101....product does not sell if the consumer doesn't know about it.

Yes, the platform needed to die...but the car should have evolved seamlessly without this
gap of 4-6 years. If it does come back...it'll be
too late, not for the diehards...but for the
general buyer.

Pete...I agree with all but the last statement. Perhaps our two outlooks differ slightly (duh [Roll Eyes] ) I say better late then never and certianly 4-6 years is too long, but absolutely TOO late...nah, but come guys let's get moving on this! I knew that was coming...maybe your SS didn't like you like mine likes me? Perhaps there was a jeoulousy thing going on with the 1st gen???? Maybe the 1st gen kept attacking the 4th gen while you were sleeping and instead you got rid of the innocent car and kept the evil step sister. [Eek!]

Nah....not possible....I kept them seperated with my wifes Bimmer in between. [Wink] (3 car garage) You just don't put two gorgeous girls
in a close environment like that without a
"Sweden" to keep the peace. [Razz]

Sadly, I gave my 01 SS nothing but love and the finest care...alas, she was a lemon for which I cannot blame her for. Maybe she just didn't love me back. [Frown] To be honest, I'm glad
I divorced her, I don't miss her at all.

Pete I am a firm beleiver that you can get a limon in anything and all I can say is I have owned 4 4th gens and the only one that gave any trouble at all was a pinion leak on the 98 which they fixed. Other than that I have had no warranty work on any of them. SLP did have to replace my crome wheels is all. My 2001 other than the wheels has had nothing done under warranty at all. It has over 65,000 miles on it now and still has orriginal brake rotors and pads and the clutch is still as strong and good as it was new. Runs better everyday and has never used oil and I do drive the H**l out of it. Sorry you got a bad one [Smile]

Absolutely...no manufacturer is perfect. I expect to have some problems with any car. They are mechanical afterall.

My beef was how it was handled and how I was treated [Wink]
