That's on my list to do also. Either the Vette PCV mod or the Greddy catch can. You might find this interesting- (btw-I also installed a manual override switch on the electric antenna because 99% of the time I've got a CD going.)
Doing this modification, along with swapping plugs, using GM Top Engine Cleaner, and resetting the PCM, instantly cured the audible pinging and up to 9 deg of knock retard we were experiencing on our factory stock 2001 Trans Am. We verified the contribution of the factory PCV arrangement to the pinging problem by temporarily disabling the modification. The audible pinging and knock retard immediately returned. We restored the modification without resetting the PCM, and the pinging immediately disappeared again. It is our opinion that the problem with the PCV system accounts for the majority of LS1 vehicles that experience pinging from the factory. We have heard of disappointed LS1 owners pursuing lemon law buybacks or selling their vehicles as a result of this problem. It's unfortunate that GM chooses to lose customers over this problem when providing a solution would be simple, especially with GM's considerable resources. We've discussed this with Pontiac Customer Assistance, and were told that GM is aware of the pinging, but doesn't consider it a problem. GM engineers have studied the situation and concluded that the pre-detonation "does not affect driveability or engine durability." The modification also appears to have significantly reduced the engine's oil consumption. The car had previously used approximately 1 qt of oil every 3000 miles, regardless of driving style. After the modification, there has been no drop in oil level during daily driving.
Originally posted by white z: Has anyone solved detonation problems by installing a filter in the pvc line? This is supposed to keep oil out of the throttle body and intake manifold. I have heard that even a small amount of oil in the air/fuel mixture can cause detonation. I always use 93 octane. I have water wetter. My cooling fans run 100% of the time. I don't think my detonation is due to a heat problem because it's the same old shiznit when it's cold. What is the deal? `02 Z28,A4,2:73,K&N FIPK,SLP Y-pipe
Just a suggestion/question...why are your cooling fans running 100% of the time. Can't be right. As far as the PCV valve, is it possible to replace it with a breather? That way gravity would be on your side. Then just plug the TB to PCV hose connection. If you have detonation when cold, it has to be a timing/fuel issue. Is your MAF sensor wire clean? I see you have a K&N. The filter oil may be contaminating your MAF.
Yeah I did the smh pcv mod two years ago. Also ran the ls1 truck pcv for awhile. The greddy can didn't appeal to me for a couple of reasons. (opinion only)
I ran the K&N since the car was a month old until last fall. Just got tired of cleaning it and letting it sit overnight to make sure any extra oil had drained. The MAF wires were clean even before cleaning them with electronics parts cleaner.
Oh yeah the override switch. I think mine came from home depot. Installed in Dec 00 still works well. Posted by Hawkeye (Member # 88) on :
I have the parts to do the mod on my car, but so far have resisted.
1) I don't understand how it can help with oil comsumption. Presumably the oil is trapped in the filter instead of fouling the plugs and contaminating the fuel, but it's still being taken from the lubrication system.
2) Any negative side effects i.e. the pressure in the intake?

My guess would be because of less vacuum being pulled due to the 2 fuel filters. "Pull the fresh air tube from the connection at the throttle body. Stick your finger at the end of the tube... you should feel some suction. It won't be nearly as much as before the modification, but it should be noticeable." I don't know the answer to your second question.

I have burned up to 3 quarts every 3k miles,.. I have the puddle of oil in the Throttle body... If GM does not give a decent diagnosis or fail to recognize my problem, I might look into this..
I know I get oil through the PCV.. and It seems I burn too much oil .. thinking I have blowby of rings as well
I will test this out after I conclude the hooplah through GM first
