I am on my 3rd, cheap, plastic hood scoop insert on my 2002 SS and I want to find a metal one that will not melt from the intense heat.

Can anyone direct me to a website to order one?

Thanks guys!

What intense heat? The OE scoop is not "cheap" plastic.

Mine is 6 years old - not melted yet!

check afterthoughtsauto.com
not sure but they may have something.
If not, rice mail order, I mean RKsport.com might as well. I know all these Cavaliers with SS hoods are getting the chrome inserts from
somewhere.

Afterthoughts doesn't do chrome hoodscoop grilles anymore....too many issues with pitting and breaking in half and stuff....

Have seen some painted with silver spray paint....looks OK but still matte finish...no blingbling shine...

It melted??? [Confused]

this is the first I've ever heard of one melting too. [Confused]

the only damage mine has suffered was from me until I learned how to take it out without losing a tab. [Embarrassed]

We have had ours chromed since 2000, no problems with heat, what happened?

Posted by ReBop (Member # 1871) on :

YES, mine melted and the dealer warranted them, twice. I am on my 3rd one.

It's a navy blue car and I live in Mississippi where the summer air temps get to near 100. Can you imagine how hot a NBM gets in a parking lot?

The first 2 were totally warped from the heat. The dealer gave me a 3rd one and I stored it in a box on a shelf and will keep it for posterity.

Thanks for the info guys, I'll go searching.

Rebop, i have also been looking for a metal billet insert, but have found no luck. i have the one from Afterthoughts, but it is the OE plastic on that has been chrome dipped "electrically fused" to the plastic i think. or something like that. did not realise that they did not make them there any more. i have the test piece from Deanne from Afterthoughts and i have had it for 2 years and no real problems. if you find anything, let me know.

REbop-they were tested on a black car in Arizona in the summer - much hotter than MS - no problem. I never heard of that before-have you done any engine mods to affect the air flow?

Posted by ReBop (Member # 1871) on :

No engine mods but, seriously, 2 of them have melted. I can't even touch my hood, it's so hot after the car sits out on a summer day.

I searched all over the web for an aftermarket part but NO luck so far.

If anyone knows where a quality, metal insert can be purchased, be sure to let me know.

Thanks!

Bob I've seen the question of a metal or billet grille insert come up on several occasions on different boards. So far no one up come up with one. Good luck.

How about a light colored car cover?

Posted by NATESS (Member # 982) on :

you may have to have some one make one for you that works with metals. i know of someone here, if they can do one for me that will look good as well as not costing me an arm and a leg, i will let you all know.

That is just WEIRD!! I have a black car...and Texas summers are h3llacious.....we get up to well over 100 in August and September, and I daresay the temps reach 110+ on asphalt parking lots....and so far, nothing's melted but ME.....

Annnyyyway, I'm looking for a chrome insert, too, so post up if you find one!!!

I know I saw a post of someone who had made one on one of the other boards (can't remember which one). It was stainless horizontal bars as I recall and looked very nice. He was making them for others too. Try doing a search on some of the other major boards including the "LS" boards too.

Years ago when we first started "chattting" on
boards, Mike Grasso did a group purchase on
chrome plated ones. That's the one I have. He's
not around here anymore, however he was located
in L.A. Maybe someone around there could find
the plating shop he dealt with. It was hard to
find a shop that would plate plastic at a
reasonable cost, but he found one!

My thoughts also. A good Noah car cover would fix this.

To restrictive for me. I did just the opposite, I cut out the inner grill leaving only the black outer trim. Looks pretty good on the white car.

I've been looking for an aluminum insert (honeycomb, not horizontal) and emailed MBA.

Here's the response I got from Paul:

Theya re on our list of products to develop, I just don't know when we will get
to them.

Maybe if enough people ask, they'll get to it sooner.

Yup, I still have the one Mike arranged for. No melting or peeling so far.

Still no luck, I've searched all over the web and have not found an aftermarket one yet.

I guess I'll have to buy a couple of OEM parts and keep the stock one going to keep the debris out of the hoodscoop.

If anyone finds one, please let me know..

I'm also surprised by the melting. My onyx black car sits in the 120 heat in Palm Springs on a regular basis without trouble....

I had a cheapy done silvery spray on job that I had for a month, before it basically started peeling off and I just got a regular black one. So, if you're going to get one, I'd recommend a slightly higher quality or all aluminum piece.

ReBop, Would you post a picture of your "melted" insert? Is it the OE insert, or an aftermarket one?

I have an Afterthoughts scoop insert in A+ condition, if anyone is interested.

You have a PM!

Who makes the Ultra Z hood insert, that's done pretty well. Maybe that company could also make regular SS hood inserts, I'm looking to replace my 6 year old one on my '98 when it gets painted.

SnakeEater is contacting MBA products about stainless steel SS hood inserts.
