I have 600 miles on my 01 SS, and i swear i can hear a very slight rod knock when its in first and around 2500-300 rpm, it gradualy becoms less noticable as the engine becomes hotter, but im wondering if it had some rough test rides at the dealership prior to warming up, anybody having this problem?? maybe Im just a nervous new father! That is a normal characteristic of the LS1 motor. As long as the Oil pressure is normal, chill and turn up the radio.

Thanks, I figured it might be normal, but a rod knock in a new engine could be a painful experience.I had a Ramair 3 in a 69 GTO and very bad rod slap after a crummy rebuild. I hate dummy guages! Posted by DaddySS (Member # 848) on :
In one of the write ups about the LS6, they talked about tighter clearances on the main and rod journals as a result of better machining etc. which they said would take care of the characteristic "knock" of the LS1 prior to reaching full operating temperature.

Veeellllly interesting! well, i suppose until I graduate to somthing with an LS6 I will just have to tollerate a little knocking. I listen to everything, what can I say! Thanks for the info DaddySS Posted by DaddySS (Member # 848) on :
The good news is - this little bit of slap is recognized as just a characteristic of our engines until they warm up fully and should not affect longevity of the engine.

My 98 doesn't have the "Slap"--has never had it. The 2000's don't have it. The 99's don't have it. Not all of the 2001's have it. My 2001 has it and I'm P!$$ed!
Most all of us (2001 LS1 Owners) have that cold-engine rap. Some of us have it worse than others. Some of us are more annoyed by it than others. I'M ANNOYED!! I'M P!$$ED OFF!@#$ I don't buy that old "Normal for these kinds of cars" routine. For the money I paid for this MFer, I expected it to be perfect! Ford has a better idea--it's just not faster.
