I dont really know what to call them ....filler piece?? The paint on mine keeps flaking off . I was looking at a 2002 vert at the dealer and it looks like they now have a plastic cover attached with 3m tape . I went in to get a part # from the dealer and they listed this filler piece as being the same part # as my 95 ( $107 ) . But its definately not the same as my 95 . Anyone know whats up ??? Could I possibly just order the plastic cover from the coupe ? Am I the only one thats having this problem or is it common for the paint to bubble up and flake off this piece ?

You're not the only one. I have a friend with a '95 Z28 with the same problem. I was surprised to see that it is a cast piece as I thought it was plastic on my '99.

I have no answers or solutions to offer

Luckily I do not have this problem but my car is a garage queen and rarely sits in the sun for any extended period.

Found out what the deal is . GM at some point on the newer ( I think 97 ) redesigned that piece . Instead of being just painted metal , the new piece is the same shape with a plastic cover on it which is not avail. separately . GM lists the same part # for all years because this new piece superceeds the old painted metal piece on the 94-96 cars . So if you buy a replacement for the older cars thru GM you get the re-designed version . I'll probably buy them so I wont have to deal with this annoying problem ever again [Smile]
Thru the dealer they were $107 . I checked GMparts direct awhile back and if I remember right they were only $62 a piece shipped .

Must have been changed post 97. As my 97 has the same problem. Both sides have about a quarter size spot with the paint flaked off on one side.

Yep, my 97 has the metal pieces as well... one of which has a small chip of paint missing.

My TA was serial number 001687 though, so it very well could have been a mid-year change (I also have the 93-96 gauges with the analogue odometer).

I'd much rather have that problem than a piece of metal with bubbling off paint , lol [Big Grin]

Rickerbucks,
Mine's an early 97, bld #35. What's yours.

I read on another board that this piece is removable, just bolts in. Top must be part way down to get at all of them.

Mine is a "late" 97', no problems with the plastic.
