I was extremely happy with the factory system in my 97 WS6. In some preliminary listening (sitting in the garage ) I noticed quite a drastic difference in sound quality in my 01 Hawk convertible. The sound from the back isn't very full sounding; lacking bass. Now I realize that I lost 2 speakers in moving from the coupe to the vert. Are the two speakers in the back seat of the vert. supposed to be a full range speaker or are they just mid range. The coupe, I believe had 6x9's in the rear hatch area that definitely filled in the sound. Should I get better sound out of my rear speakers or is this the price of having the convertible?

I think that's the price of a convertible. Our sould is lousy too. With the roof down look at what and where the rear speakers are. There is nothing creating a "box" for them.
The bright side is that when you're cruising with the top down it won't really matter

I'm in the process of putting a new sound system into me '94 - We sort of have to give up on sound quality and just increase the power to the speakers.

The rear speakers are fed "full-range" sound from the amp, but lacking a sufficient baffle around them, they can't produce any bass. The majority of the bass in a stock system comes from the front door speakers.
To improve the sound in a ragtop, a subwoofer is absolutely required. There are fewer solutions for a ragtop than there is for a coupe. However, there are 3 basic solutions:
1) Add a "stealthbox", a small sub-box stuffed into the corner of the trunk, either over the top-motor or in place of the spare tire. This saves trunk space, but the bass response is compromised due to limited sub size and small box volume.
2) Use up your limited trunk volume with a big box and a pair of large subs, or a smaller box & single sub to save some of that volume. You trade off trunk volume for bass response.
3) Use a "Johnny B's Sub-Box", which stuffs 2 or 4 8" subs in that small space between the top-well and the trunk above the rear axle tunnel / gas tank. It replaces that plastic removeable filler panel that separates the trunk from the passenger compartment, but follows it's contour so it doesn't interfere with the top when it's down. It's ported and baffled such that it turns the trunk volume into the "box", which is large for really deep bass response. The big benefit is that it doesn't take up any useable trunk space! I just have a few questions to this topic. I have 2001 Camaro convertible. It came with the Monsoon CD system. Now, I know I lost the two rear speakers(midrange), but do I still have the amp(500 watt peak)? Did Chevrolet/GM/Delco just take out the rear midranges and left everything else as described(two-ways speakers in the front and two woofers in the middle)? If they did, I sure as hell ain't getting any bass from the middle woofers. I get the most bass from the front. Basically, the speakers in the middle sounds like crap like everyone has stated. I guess what I'm asking is if there is any official confirmation or something that GM did for a convertible's Monsoon system. Are those speakers woofers or full-range?
