During the track day at Brainerd I was smoking (burning oil) in and immediately following right hand turns. I was definitely encountering high engine speeds and g's.

I attributed the smoking to a slight oil overfill, too low a viscosity (5W-30) for the conditions and a motor that may be a little more tired than I'd hoped. The quote, and other discussions on the PCV system has me thinking there may be more to it.

The motor is internally stock, with PPC headers, no cats, and EGR and AIR deleted. It hasn't been tuned yet.

The motor feels strong, and the fellow in the M5 said I wasn't holding him up.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

The PCV has been as issue for a while. There
was that catch can filter fix, I recall. Try a
search for info on www.ls1tech.com I find some
useful stuff there from time to time.

Any thoughts on doing the fall Skyline run this
year?

Negative on Skyline. We're using up the balance of our holidays for the trip to Mexico in August. Bowling Green got bumped as well

Oh no.....PoSSum is going hhhmmmm again. The last time he did that he was chasing suspensuion gremlins. PoSSum how did that go. Get rid of them?

As far as the burning oil goes, this is a topic that I have not paid much attention to. But my '98 burns oil during lapping and solo I events but not on the street.

From what I understand part of the problem is that oil does not drain back fast enough from the heads under high RPM and the vacuum pick up is in a bad location. The result is "slurp".

GM attempted to fix this problem with the LS6....as you noted. Also, one of the things that the catch can mod does is to restrict the amount of vacuum to the heads/vally area.

This was recently discussed in the Great Lakes forum on LS2.com with a friends car. He put an LS6 intake on his engine, and it was/is using a lot of oil. The PCV system was disconnected and oil consumption went way down. He apparently is now looking at the catch can mod.

I think the major front end stuff is sorted out. The next autoX will hopefully confirm that. I suspect I'll be looking at the bump steer issue sooner than later though.

I've always wondered if a set of tall valve covers would help this problem. But with them going for a few hundred dollars and the need for a coil relocation kit. I will never personally find out.
