I use it and I love it! One reason...awesome gas mileage. On the interstate I use it between 65mph and 80mph and as low as 50mph. I've gotten around 30 mpg or greater from 6th gear. What an impressive torgue range! I have the 3.42 axle ratio. What do you guys think about 6th gear?

I use it whenever possible. Being an old 4spd. kinda guy, it took a while to get used to but now I love it.

Sixth gear is the only gear to be in above 60mph if you expect to get any decent gas milage. For smart acceleration use 5th, but 6th will do rather nicely above 70. The best gas milage I have gotten was 32mpg @ 80mph on a trip to Bowling Green last year. Hope i do as well this year. Posts: 260 | From: Coral Springs, Florida | Registered: Dec 2000

Got 28 mpg cruising to vegas at 85-90 mph. I still had some play time, about 4 times I did some 0-135 mph blasts! Posts: 545 | From: Gardnerville, NV. | Registered: Aug 2003

I always use it on the highway. A rule of thumb for me to keep my RPM's below 2000 either ont he highway or around town and I can always expect mpg around 30. Posts: 2651 | From: Enola (Harrisburg Area), Pennsylvania | Registered: Jan 2002

I spend most of the time in 5th at speeds 50-65 and 6th above that. With the 4.10's you can actualy have decent acceleration in 6th. Posts: 20 | From: Loganville Ga. | Registered: Aug 2002

Yeah no kiddin'!!
I use 6th all the time on the freeway above 60 MPH. I averaged 25 MPG on the trip to SLP CAD in Vegas last year and that included drag racing and 80+ MPH on the highway. You gotta love 6th gear.

Depends on the road ... but I'm usually in 6th at 50 MPH or faster if the road is flat. I average around 18 - 22 MPG on a given week, with my commute being mostly non-highway.

With 3.73 gears, it makes a good overdrive above 60 MPH, it use it on flat roads a lot.

I very seldom use 6th my car turned 50,000 miles this past weekend coming back from Tenn. and did not use 6th the whole trip and when I go to Superfest which is a 1500 mile round trip I never use 6th going or coming to little power even with my 410 rwhp I have maybe used 6th 5 times on a trip since I had the car

I am considering changing to 4.10s. What brand of gearsets/installation kits do you have? someone in another post told me his Richmonds are noisy, and I'm looking for alternatives. Does GM sell 4.10s for these rears?

I have Motive (GM) gears. I bought the package that Thunder Racing sells that includes the gears, an install kit and the TA rear girdle.

Can you send me a link? How much was total cost? Are you happy with them? I was also considering 3.73's but i figure if youre gonna go through all the trouble of swapping gears, why go halfway.

Because you already have the 3 series carrier? If I were going to do this, I'd get the entire "Strange" 12 bolt assembly. Why go halfway?

I bought the same setup for Thunder as Chab did except I have the Strange 4.10's. They also have been as quite as stock. Over 11K miles so far.

I use mine as much as is practical. We have a lot of 45-50MPH country roads around here and it works fine as long as the roads aren't too hilly.
I always use it on the interstates.

I have Motive 4.10s. Luv 'em. They whine a little, but that is to be expected. A good installer will limit the whine. And with 4.10s, you get to use 6th once in a while. The difference @ 70mph is only about 400-500 rpm...no biggie.
