Just talked to Rick at K&N in Riverside CA (909.684.9762) and the FIPK is STILL on hold - no ETA available and his information is that there is a CARB (California smog department) approval delay. There are no Non-CARB parts planned, and no "sample" or prototype units available.

SO, being that we are planning a 5000 mile jaunt across the USA in May, what other options are there?

VOLANTE - well - what's the news - is it worth the $250, any genuine dyno runs to show a flow and hp improvement?

MTI/Whisper/SLP lids - well they all have varying quality and sealing problems - not acceptable - I am looking for a used lid to try grafting to a stock air lid - factory clamps, aftermarket outlet - just don't want to spend $100 for a lid I am going to butcher...

CONICAL on MAF - well - anyone done this???

other ideas???

I have heard bad things about the Volante, as in it doesn't fit right or flow very well.
Good luck!

I saw some intresting fabrication on television a couple of weeks ago. A car enthusiast built his own intake out of carbon fiber. Now it would seem to me that if you were after the fit of the stock lid you could go to a local hobby shop and pick up some mold making material as well as some release agent and make a copy of your stock lid to use as a master. Then you could aquire some carbon fiber or other suitable material and have it fit like the stock lid, and take the stock filter, or the k&n.

Fabrication of parts is a lot of work and takes a lot of time but sometimes it is the only way to go if you are unhappy with stock and the after market parts available. I have done this on different occasions myself and been pleased with the results but I was working with metal on one occasion and Plexiglass on an other. I made intake manifolds for a Moto Guzzi Le Manns and a new gauge pod. My projects were very simple I think compared to the SS air box lid, but building it your self is always an option.

Try these people, they have what your after in performance filtering as well as some killer lubes !!

http://www.1st-in-synthetics.com/air_filter.htm

I`ve run about 5K on my 01 SS with the AmSoil filter and I`m quite pleased with the difference it makes and the job it does. I also run their Syn. Oil and as far as performance go`s..... either product oil or filter out performs the top sig. line rated products out there.

I prefer to do things the old style way,if it works, It Works...USE IT !!
If ya can save a few bucks by not running with all the famous sig. liner bolt on`s out there why not do it ??
It cost 20.00 to become a prefered Customer for one year. You`ll save that much on just one case of their Syn. Oil !!
Great bunch of down home type people that will do what it takes to KEEP you as a customer.
Ever see a bad thread line AmSoil products ?
Yes I`m a prefered customer,I`m not a dealer and will gain nothing but the products performance in my SS,why shouldnt everyone else save a few bucks too ?

Best of Luck !

I'm puzzled as to why you think a 7 year old class action lawsuite involving Mobile 1's false claim or suggestion that aviation motors are good for more than 100 hours. No one in there right mind would exceed that tear down limit.
How do you think it effects automotive motors and do you think GM takes Mobiles word on Syn. oil? Just curious..

Mobil One has been over rated for so long it`s not even worth kicking that dead animal again.
If you run Mobil and like it ?? Cool !!
Try getting the oil tested after a 3K run out, then run some AmSoil for 3k and have it tested.
Like pappy said ...the proof is in tha pudd`in !!

Aviation oil and motor oil are as different as can be. Let's not bash oil companies here, unless they deserve it. 200 Billion in pure NET PROFITT?!?! (exxon-mobil). Gee, PRICE GOUGING, PERHAPS?

Hmmmm...
I had a '85 Camaro last 210K and was still going strong using Quaker State 10W-40.
IMHO no need for synthetic since you should ALWAYS change your oil every 3K no matter what oil companies claim.
