Hi all, I'm new to this board and I'm interested in buying an SS. I have a couple questions about this process. First off, I'm looking for a 99-02 SS (M6). My questions are concerning some sort of "checklist" I can follow when trying to make my final decision on which car to buy. For example, are there any things on the SS that are prone to breaking that I should look for to see if the car has been driven hard? What are the most common problems with an SS? How can I tell which options the car came from the factory/SLP with? Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. I look forward to participating in this board in the future. It appears to be very informative and friendly. Thanks.

Welcome to the board! I would check the tires, brake rotors for being warped, brake pad condition, fit and finish of the body panels and look for any areas that may have been repainted due to a possible accident, maybe a Carfax for prior vehicle history, check for pinion seal leak or any other fluid leaks, condition of engine oil,ask for maintaince records, make sure car drives straight and the steering wheel is straight, check operation of all accessories including shifting of the trans. You may be able to look inside the rear 1/4 panels for rubber debris from burnouts.

First of all, welcome. I hope you settle in here and find this to be a happy home on the internet, as we do.

I did a GOOGLE search for "used car checklist" and came up with a nice assortment of websites with info: Used Car Checklist 1

Look for premature suspension part wear and excessive tire wear for the # of miles/kms on the car. Check repair records to see if any parts have been replaced (transmission, clutch, valves, etc.).

There are always quirks with any vehicle, so there most likely won't be anything on an SS that is a problem any more or less than a Z28 (and in some cases, the 6 cyl Camaro).

Look for a sticker from SLP Engineering on the trailing edge of the passenger door. If there is optional SLP content on the car, it will be listed there. You can also call SLP at 1-248-288-3066, give them the VIN and find out this same info.

First off, thanks for the warm welcome. I wasn't as concerned with a generic "used car checklist" as I was for one somewhat specific for the SS (if there is one!) However, it looks like you have answered that one for me, sorry if I was a little vague with my question. Thanks for the links though, maybe they'll have some info I haven't thought to check out. Good info about the passenger door listings, I wasn't aware of that. Anyway, thanks for the help, I'll let you know how things turn out. Posts: 2 | From: FL | Registered: Feb 2003

The SLP specific options are listed on special SLP stickers located on the passenger side door. Or you can look for yellow shocks(Bilstein Package), aluminumn differential cover(auburn), floor mats, dash plaque, chrome wheel package, grill('01-'02), paint chiping on hood/spoiler, dual/dual exhaust, center mount exhaust('01-'02). If there are no SLP stickers then at least check the drivers door option code sticker for "Y2Y". This is to make sure it is a real SS. Another good way to find out if it is real is to get the VIN # and call SLP Engineering and ask if their system recognises it. They can also tell you what number the car is and what options it left SLP with.
Welcome!

Welcome faSSt. I concur with all of the above replies to you but also if the owner has done what I have which is put all of his/her car information in a binder sealed in plastic then this should also serve as a tool as to what he/she purchased as options from the factory and from SLP as well. Good Luck and again Welcome.
