I'm planning on a set of headers for my 96 LT1. Leaning toward either the SLP's or edelbrock. Anyone have experience with either or both of these? Recommendations, advice, opinions appreciated. Ease or difficulty of installation is probably at least as big a consideration as outright performance.

I have the SLP shorty headers on my 97 SS. The installation was not that bad it helps to have an extra set of hands around. I went for the ceramic coated just to keep down the underhood temps. I had quit checking this board because I felt like an outcast. my car being so outdated in the LS1 era. it is nice to finally see another LT1 thats interested in upgrades. Hope that helps some.

Shorties are as good as manifolds. We dyno'd LOW with the SLP shorties. I am an SLP man myself but am not going to lie to you. We switched them out for Hooker Long Tubes. The car gained so much its incredible. I dont have exact dyno numbers because it wasnt my car. It was a 97 30th vert with an A4 and w/shorties it was in the 280's with the HLT's it jumped to 318 RWHP! Oh and the only other mods are LT1/LT4 Hotcam, springs, and cold air. Its a Z not an SS.

I'm considering going with the PPC headers, hi-flo cats amd Y-pipe combo. They are designed to go together and "fit" right. I've helped with headers 4 times already. All the headers went in OK but the Y-pipes were a joke. None of them fit right and it took alot of pounding to get them on. One set the Y-pipe was banging on the floor board. On another the Y-pipe is about 1/4" from the fuel lines, with the lines moved to the higher level on the bracket. Unfortunately, we don't have any feedback on the PPC system yet.

For an LS1 I would do 1 of 3 headers. They are all Long Tubes.
1. TTS 2. Grotyhanns(sp?) 3. Hooker Super Comps (jet hot coated)
The TTS are like $1299 but come with custom y-pipe with custom cats.
The Grots are like $899 but don't come with a y-pipe.
Hooker jet hot coated you can get shipped to your door for $560 and another $300 for the hooker y-pipe also coated.
All of you should do Long Tubes no matter what. When you get headers you should expect knocking, its just a normal trait of headers and thats the price you gotta pay to have performance sometimes.

Isn't the PPC's based on the Grotyhanns(sp?) design??? I recall it being posted somewhere before that these were the best performing headers.

Thanks for the info guys. I was leaning toward the SLP's since Edelbrock didn't seem concerned enough to respond to my email querries about their shorties. I know long tubes would be better but I REALLY didnt want to fool around with changing anything else on the exhaust system. Now I don't know what to do. I may just hold off until I can do the whole TPIS head, cam, 52mm throttle body kit.

Get the Hooker long tubes, hooker y-pipe, and then just connect a bullet muffler to the y and dump the bullet. I had a bullet added onto my y dumped afterward for only $80. That was installed.

I recently bought a set of Jet Hot LTs for my Hawk... they seem to be very well made and needless to say the coating looks awesome.
They are based on the Hookers with some improvements (thicker flanges for one) and have all emissions hook ups and the price isn't bad either. And since they're based on the Hookers you can use one of their off-raod pipes.

I just purchased a set of Jet Hot LTs. They just showed up... they are absolutely gorgeous and since they are based of the Hookers I know the performance will be just as nice.

I just got a set of Jet Hots also and can vouch for your statements!

AS&M make a good mid-length header with 1 3/4" primaries. If your worried about ground clearence.
I don't know if all of us have to read the post...
I just sold my AS&M headers when I bought my Jet Hots, they are good headers. In fact, George Baxter had them on his car when he was pushing "only" 700hp or so.
