this is about my 95 quad four grandam. it was having trouble turning over- so i bought a new battery and a starter. i also checked the head on the block to make sure it wasn't cracked and it was fine and plugs were dry. so i hook up the starter and it still does nothing?? the wires are in the right place on the starter. why won't it turn over??

Can you turn the engeine over by hand (is the crank free)? Does the starter receive voltage when the key is turned to crank. Does the starter do anything at all or is the car just quiet?

the starter is just hanging under neath the car with the wires connected. i didn't put it into the bell housing incase there would be a problem. nope the engine/starter does nothing. the guages and fuel pump turn on of course. but not a peep from the starter..... what a pain this has turned into Posts: 65 | From: Youngstown-Ohio | Registered: Sep 2003

The starter has to be grounded through the bolts to the block in order for it to work, or it is an open circuit, and will do nothing. Bolt it in, and then try it again. If still nothing, test with a voltmeter for voltage to "control" terminal on the starter during crank, and also to the main battery terminal.

i have the ground hooker up already, just didn't put the starter up into the housing cause it has a pain in the *** on the quad four to get it out. what about the fuseable links checking them to see if they burned up. when i tried to start it the other day before it did nothing it poped and something burned? thanks

well the starter tested good all the fuseable links all have power so the starter is getting power it just won't turn over. i have nothing i can use to turn the motor over by hand. makes me this maybe a relay burned up for something?? the oil also has no antifreeze in it. so i can't see the motor being locked up....

Did you check for power on the small terminal of the starter that has 12v to it in the crank position?

I had a bad positive cable (the large one from the battery to the starter)many. years ago on a '65 Chevy Impala. I finally found it by using a jumper cable from the positive battery post to the starter. The cable looked fine from the outside, but once I started to flex it, I found the bad spot. You might have 12volts but not enough current to turn the starter if there are only a few strands still in contact. Do you have a clamp on amp meter to check the current draw when you try to start it?

When you say you have the ground hooked up - what ground? connect a jumper cable directly to the positive and one from the negative battery to the body of the starter and energize the solenoid - if it turns it's not the starter. Now connect the posive cable back to the battery, leave the negative jumper attached to the starter body - turn now? If no - the positive cable on the car is bad.

A volt meter is needed to perform a voltage drop.Radio Shack may even sell a cheap meter.
