According to road tests the Cobra R does a 13.2 at 107 mph. Considering I've heard of SS's doing 13.4 at 106, does 385 sound like an exagerration? Most know Ford has a history of inflating numbers. 50 more ponies than SS and barely faster. By the way, the R is a cool piece of machinery. Also, torque is 385 vs. 350 for SS. A ZO6 is 385 hp and would crush the R.

i do not think a Z06 would crush a "R" but it would probably take 6 out of 10. Not to mention could listen to a cd and end the run with AC! Posts: 918 | From: Davie, Fl., USA | Registered: Feb 2000

A friend of mine has a new R ( he also owns a 93R and a 95R )and I dont think its HP #s are overrated. Its not set up for drag racing but for road racing and it still runs high 12's stock at sea level. Cool thing is its a pure racer, looks it,sounds it,etc. Bad thing is its a pure racer, no radio,AC etc. The guy knows a Z06 will outdrag it by a few tenths but also knows its only one of 300, a true collector car. As for me I think its cool that Ford had the balls to do it. But would I spend almost 60Gs for it? no way, I'll take a Z06 and a nice tropical vacation for the same bucks.

There have been quite a few Z06 owners who have been able to muster low 12's at around 114mph w/ good traction..... bone stock except for tires. I'd say that is w/in "crushing" territory. If they are rated the same hp then also remember the Z06 is by far lighter than any Mustang.

Motor Trend dynoed both cars, and while the Cobra R dynoed a 376 RWHP it ran a 1/10 second slower in the 1/4" than the Z06. The Z06 Dynoed significantly lower than the Cobra, but the 1/4 mile times don't lie. Both were in the 12's However, as much of a Corvette lover as I am, 1/10 second isn't "crushing" anything. One more thing, even though Motor Trend isn't perfect, the Cobra was 1/10 second quicker 0-60. This is just what I've read.

I must have missed the issue with those numbers. The one I'm talking about is with the Z06, Cobra R and Viper. I'll dig up the issue date for you tonight.

No. This is a different issue with only those three cars. It came out prior to the issue that you're talking about. This was the first I had heard about the Cobra R. It was the first tests done on it.

Wow, he got a DEAL, the Cobra R's I saw were going for nothing less then 70 grand!
Imagine that 60grand for a MUSTANG! let along 70 grand! Would I pay 50grand for a F-body? Hell no!
I believe the ZO6 is by far the better car. BUT it is nice that Ford makes these cars, the only problem is they make these 385hp cars for Road Racers and they are the ones that can't even afford to buy them. Sad but true.
Oh well.
Doug PS. I will take my ZO6 is pewter please.

My friend Al ordered the 'R from a dealer up here where demand for that type of car is not that high. Sadder still is like most folks with 'R's his three sit in the garage as trailer queens and dont get out much and most people never get to see one. I have driven the '95 R and I liked it, he was trying to talk me into buying a used one from down in Michigan but I bought the SS Still gotta give Ford credit for even doing them.
Ohh I'll take a Z06 in Millenium Yellow!!

Here is also a qoute from that article in the August 2000 issue "Detroit Muscle". "This particular preproduction ZO6 suffered from a slipping clutch and a failing second gear syncro. Since the 1-2 upshift happens before 60 MPH that slow syncrp could account for much of the difference between our time and Chevy's claimed 4.0 flat."
I know that the ZO6 is faster, probably getting at least 12.59 like you said, but I'd bet that the Cobra would get a little faster too. MT is always a little slower than the Manufacturers claims. So, 2/10 or 3/10 isn't that much of a difference. If someone at the track beats me by that difference, I'd think it was a great race. Don't get me wrong, the Corvette is by far the superior car. I don't even like Mustangs much. If someone would purchase a Cobra R over a ZO6 then they are a serious Mustang fanatic with too much money. But, it is a competitive car.
