Keep it at the track and please don't endanger the lives of passengers and others on the street.

Couple Killed Drag Racing

An early morning crash on the Near West Side that killed a married couple may have been caused by drag racing, police said.

At about 1:40 a.m. Wednesday, the couple and a passenger were traveling eastbound in the 800 block of Taylor Street in a 1997 Chevrolet Camaro, when the man apparently lost control of the car and skidded sideways into a light pole, police News Affairs Ptl. Alice Casanova said.
Allen Hammond, 28, of 7447 S. South Shore Dr., was pronounced dead at 2:30 a.m. at the Stein Institute, a spokesman for the Cook County medical examiner's office said. His wife, Mary Hammond, 32, also of the South Shore Drive address, was pronounced dead at 2:10 a.m. at Cook County Hospital. Both suffered massive head injuries.

The back seat passenger in the sports car, a 25-year-old man, was in serious condition at County Hospital with head injuries, an administrator said.

A pin-in response was called to extricate the occupants of the sports car, a fire dispatcher said.

Casanova said witnesses reported seeing the Camaro racing with a Chevrolet Lumina. Police Major Accidents Investigation Unit Sgt. Tracey Jenkins said the cause of the crash remained under investigation as of 6 a.m., and could not confirm the witness' reports.

Monroe District police could not provide any information.

Teri,
In San Diego, it seems like there is a story on the local TV news every week about someone being killed or seriously injured while street racing. Unfortunately, those involved are frequently driving Camaros and Mustangs.

I've occaisonally responded to posts describing a "kill" on the street, admonishing those who read the posts to take it to the track. In every instance, I've been ridiculed and told to "shove it" where the sun don't shine.

Folks who engage in this type of activity are not in the state of mind to accept advice. Only hard experience will teach them this particular lesson.

I have street raced quite a bit. Last Saturday I took my car on the expressway and hit 145mph. Never again. One mistake at that speed and its all over. I will never get my car up that fast again and I am actually starting to not want to race on the street now. You never know when someone might pull out in front of you. Like was the case last friday when an old lady pulled out in front of me and came about a foot from hitting her. I'll be taking the car to the track this weekend.

I've done the same thing and have received the same response a few times... I just don't bother reading the "I raced a Mustang up to 125mph yesterday" posts anymore.

That is terrible. I always get people revving their engine at me. But I am not a fan of street racing...so I usually ignore them.

Now Amy, why would anyone want to drag race a GIRL?
