I guess I should have elaborated on what I was amused with. It wasn't in a sick way of getting enjoyment out of someone tormenting a little kid so much. It was the fact that the little guy was caught and taught a lesson. I see so many posts from people about how their valve stem caps are disappearing one at a time. It's commonly kids that take them for their bikes. Seeing how our caps were a gift from someone, I'd be a bit miffed if one was stolen.
I feel the guy should not have traumatized him by making him cry so much, but.......a kid caught stealing something off of someone else's car should feel a little bit nervous/scared/uncomfortable just to help it sink in.
The little guy will get over it I'm sure, but I can bet he'll think twice about stealing valve stem caps again.

I would of done the exact same thing! I had my caps stolen. I have a friend that had his caps stolen twice, and he used a wrench to tighten them down nice and tight the kids must of used a wrench to take them off.
I would of done the same except take the pictures of the kid crying.
But like Possum said maybe it will stop him from moving on to bigger things.

What amused me about the story was what must have been going through that kid's mind while he was getting chewed out. Better to scare 'em straight early when it will do some good than let them move on to bigger and badder things like Possum hinted at. He got the crap scared out of him, but otherwise wasn't hurt. It could have turned out a whole lot worse and thankfully it didn't.
I had 2 of my stem caps stolen earlier this year and I admit I was pretty P$#$#@$ about it. If I had caught the little cretin, his parents would have had to come and get him and he wouldn't have gotten his bike back until my replacement stem caps were in hand. It amazed me that the other kid's parents were jerks about it. Sheesh !! Some of these idiots just live in denial. If I had done that when I was a kid, my dad would have tanned my backside AND made me replace what was stolen.
Like Teri said, he'll think twice before he does that again.

i totally agree. i didn't dare do anything like that when i was a kid, because i did not want to get a whipping from my dad. parents for the most part today are too laxed, and when the kid gets older, the parents are too afraid to spank or disapline the kid for fear of having the cops called. i swear. While caps are, no doubt, a target of sorts - they can disappear on their own. For example, it took me a while to realize that JiffyLube wasn't tightening them down properly after "checking the air" during oil changes. Checking them before I drive off from any type of service anywhere has kept them from spontaneously jumping off.

This brings up a sore subject right now. Just this weekend my fiance had been at the dragstrip (which by the way he ran a new best time of 13.48 at 101.5 in his stock 2001 Lightning). We went to eat with some friends after we left. While we were in the restaurant some "punk" tried to steal his truck. They pushed the lock into the door and were unable to get it open. Fortunately it is not damaged too badly. There are three small scratches under the door handle. All the other damage will be fixed when the door handles are replaced.
So as was stated before...if this keeps the kid from moving on to bigger stuff...it was worth it. I am sure if we would have caught the person messing with the truck they would have been doing more than crying. But it probably was not a kid.

The honda crowd is just a few years older than the crying kid. Most of us have our own kids, so we feel compassion for the little sh!t. He got what he deserved.
Out of the ordinary punishments worked pretty well in our family. I caught my son chopping on a huge, live tree on our property. I made him observe the damage for two hours. He changed his mind about wanting to be a lumberjack
After breaking down like that, the beginner thief probably learned a lesson. It's the kids that show no emotion that I worry about!

If I was one of the parents I might have turned around and filed assult on a minor charges on him.
He had no right to pull the kid off the bike and deffinatly needs anger managment. As he said he was shaking he was so mad. And what is he so mad over $20's worth of valve stem caps.
Then he intionally took pictures to get pleasure out showing off his accomplishment.

That little kid will think long and hard before doing something like that again. Calling the cops was probably the smartest thing this guy did. Nothing scares little kids like being chewed out by cops. This guy should have had the cops go after the other kid, since that kid's parents were denying their child's involvement.

Taking pictures was probably overdoing it a little, but if the parents had dared make a stink over this, they themselves could be answering for why they weren't controlling their child. Parents are responsible for the actions of their minor children and it could be argued that if they were receiving proper parenting at home, then the whole thing might never have happened. Sound like a bunch of BS??? Some of it is. Lighten up a little. The little brat got caught and got the scare of his little delinquent life. Given how passionate most of us are over our cars, the owner showed at least enough maturity not to hit the kid or do something worse. If his parents have any common sense, they'll talk it over with the other kid's parents and maybe they can find more worthwhile ways for their kids to spend their time (yardwork, chores, schoolwork, chores, schoolwork, chores, no TV, no bikes, no Playstation). That usually works good for a couple of weeks!!!

A little dab of loc-tite will keep those cap's on alittle better so you'll need a wrench to get them off, this might help keep them from getting stolen.

This guy over reacted. Kids do stupid things like that for no reason...most of the time they don't mean to hurt anyone. Better to keep your head and figure out a more positive way to get the point accross.
If someone treated my son like that, I'd be pissed.
