Alright, long story short, new place has garage plus two floors to get over in order to hang X-mas lights from the eves. I measured it Sunday, and it's a drop of 28', 1.5" from the eve to the driveway. I also have a peak in the first third of the eve that goes up about 3-4 feet. So, figure I have to reach up to the 32 foot mark. How big of an extension ladder will I need? And how long would such a ladder be when it's collapsed, because I'll need to hang it from the ceiling of my garage and it has to fit. Thanx!

I work for the phone company. I use a ladder every day. I have a 28' ladder on my truck. If you need to go up 32' a 28 foot ladder will work fine. If you have the extra cash, I would get a fibeglass one. Much, much sturdyier.

So, how did you measure it?? Here's a couple fo things to consider. The bigger the ladder, the harder it is to move around and to set up for that matter. My neighbor has a 40 ft Type I ladder that I had to use to paint three of the peaks on my house. I needed his help to put it up and to move it around. It is very heavy (but very sturdy!!
If you plan on being there for a whle, put up hooks (stainless or brass so they won't rust) and every year it is easier to hook the lights on them.
I put lights on the shrubs then put two spotlights facing the front. I don't want to be bothering with lights on the house!
Have fun and please be careful. I hate getting on a ladder. It didn't bother me when I was young ut my knees shake now in my old age.

Talking about ladders ... I found this totally unrelated piece of drivel while searching for some help for you.
