By recommendation from one of the SSOA members, I've been reading "Turn Fast" (http://www.turnfast.com/).

It recommends racing shoes. Do these have a really thin bottom or something? Is it like another readily available shoe?

They are the shoes that the race car drivers were. Thin, fire resistant, thin soled shoes designed specifically for racing. They even have a heel/toe pad on the right side of the right shoe. I recommend checking on the Pilotti website, they have them. Just keep in mind, don't wear them to bragg-smith(they have a rule that if people wear them to the class, those are the people that seem to learn the least), at least thats what they said.

You can always wear what NASCAR driver Dave Marcis wears - wingtips!

Just find a comfortable shoe that works for you. You most likely don't need driving shoes unless they're required at the event you drive in (or if they're just what you like).

I do like the Piloti designs.

Unless you're a die hard, I'd say save your money. My pair of Vans work great...soft sole with some grip going up the side. It's important that you feel the brake pedal under your foot when coming fast into a tight corner while blipping the throttle on downshifts (especially in our cars with the gas and brake so far apart).
