there's a little advice on racing, but i could not tell from any of the threads whether the asr should be turned on or off.
first time at the strip tonight, and i've never raced. can you guys fill me in? also, feel free to throw in any other tips (rpm's, when do release the clutch, how important is that burnout, etc.)

My experience at the track is my 1999 Z-28 would go 3-4 teenths faster with the ASR off but would wheel spin a bunch and some times the back end would drift around. With the ASR on the car was a little slower,went very straight and only a quick bark from the tires was noticed. I had an automatic.I would not leave any higher than 2000-2500 rpms with a stick shift and shift at no more than 5800 rpm's. A burnout with street tires is only smoke show for the crowd. I never did a burnout at all and drove around the burnout box.You may want to lower the rear tire pressure to 25 lbs and inflate the fronts to 35-40lbs. Get a good look at where the staging line is ... one of the most common rookie mistakes is to drive right through them and up to the christmas tree.
Keep the RPMS relatively low 1200 - 1400 should be fine, leave on the last yellow and feather the clutch out and the gas in. Next watch the rev's and get clean shifts into the right gear.
It'll come with time and practice. Don't expect a great first run ... remember, most of the folks only advertise their best run, not their worst ... I'm pretty sure most of us here have some 15 second timeslips in the archive.

Ditto that! Just dont try to slip the clutch very much, or you will fry it, they are VERY weak. Good luck, and let us know how it goes!

Okay, so I've never taken my car to the strip but I do know you want the ASR off. If it detects any wheel spin, the ASR will either retard your timing or let off the accelerator (I've even heard it might apply the brake to the spinning wheel). Any of those will likely cost you more time than a little wheel spin.

Ditto poSSum, low RPM start with a stick shift, on the last yellow let out the clutch and then hammer the throttle! Each track is a little different hook up, you have to have a few runs in to get the feel of it.
My first run - I spun through first and second and ended up something like 16.1 at 98 mph. I learned not to dump the clutch and fry the tires and shaved two seconds off my second run. You'll get better with practice.
