I've been a limited participant in this forum for the last year or so. New baby, new house payment, traveling for work - you know how it is.
Well, it's time to have some fun and take care of my 2000 SS. Poor thing has had no attention since I bought it 2 yrs. ago!
SLP Y-pipe and SLP lid + K&N are on the way. Thanks to Chirs in TX for never using them and shipping them to me at a discount.
It's my 30th birthday, and the whole family pitched in to get me some more speed parts!
I'd really appreciate your advice on what to do next. Also, I need some help in choosing the right synthetic oils. I've searched a lot, but there is almost too much information.
My mod goals are to gain seat-of-the-pants improvement with no internal changes. My budget is $600.
I'm thinking Pro 5.0, Short Stick for fun. What's next?? SLP MAF and Bellows or Underdrive Pulley?? Suggestions?
Thanks for reading the long message - this forum is my first home and I hope you guys can help.

Well, the first thing first, welcome back! The next thing, you got to get in touch with GMMG and get yourself a good exhaust system. Check GMMG's website for a sound bite on the system, like the rest of us, you will be impressed. I would suggest that more air in and out is the first and easiest thing to do.
My first choice is always and air box (SLP is good as any!) and an exhaust system. Which one is up to you. The GMMG is nice but for the money, I would go with the SLP Loudmouth. It is very loud however, so if you don't want loud it is not for you. I have a Borla and am very happy with it. Those are the first things that I would do and will give you a seat of the pants difference and are bolt ons that you can do yourself!
Good luck, fire away with any questions.

I have the factory Dual/Dual. Any reason to change this besides sound? I'd like a loudmouth, but it's a lot of money considering I already have the dual/dual.

i notice that you have an M6. a worth while mod would be the skip shift eliminator. most places sell it. try SLP, RKsport, LS1-Speed, etc..... incase u dont know what the eliminator is, it stops that annoying lock out of 2nd gear when the light comes on. with the eliminator, you can shift into any gear you want, even when the light comes on. in terms of synthetic oils, i would recommend mobil-1 engine oil, 5W-30 good luck. modding is always fun. 4.10 gears really wake the car up. They'd be one of my first mod's if I did it again.

I've got the Loudmouth and man, it rocks. Though it might be kind of loud if the car is your daily driver. In 2000 what was the HP gain on the dual/dual vs stock SS exhaust? 10 or 15 PH? The Loudmouth is advertised as "up to a 25 HP gain." So going by the advertised rating of your car and the Loudmouth, theoretically you would gain 10 to 15 HP. I'd say it'd probably be close to 10 maybe. If you get it on a group purchase, you can get it for around $300.
Have you considered doing the long tube headers down the line (I know it's way more then your current budget)? If so, and you go with the SLP ones, they have a y-pipe with them, so you may want to reconsider the y pipe you have on the way.
Good luck whatever you decide to do, and be carefull, it's addictive.

It was 10 HP in 2000. I need to get some life out of my manifolds! I plan to keep my cats and manifolds for now. I mostly don't like the way the stock Y-Pipe looks and I'm hoping for a little better sound from the Dual/Dual.
I'm sure I'll be changing my tune in a while - this is addicting!

The 25 HP is based on the Z28 exhaust. You get 10 from the SS exhaust, another 10 from the Y2Y exhaust, so the loudmouth is good for maybe 5 HP.
I'm running a single 3" straight pipe from the Y2Y over the axle pipe back ... a really inexpensive and functional alternative to the other exhausts.
Conventional wisdom says it's the 3" intermediate pipe in the Y2Y and aftermarket exhausts that improve the flow ... not the stuff behind the axle.

Quie true, since Z28 and Trans Am/Formula come with 2.75 inch ins. dia. intermediate pipe(at least they did in 98 :mad . That is why replacing a D/D is purley a function of soundon a stock or near stock engine. It realy doesn't have the airflow capability to notice a large HP/TQ gain. Do a heads/cam or forced induction, and yeah, you could lose up to 15 HP on a muffled system vs a resonator. But it would be just about too loud for daily driving, IMHO.
But 4.10's and a Pro 5.0 or B&M Ripper shifter would be my choice. GOtta firm up that 2-3 upshift!

I would also recommend the SLP cold air induction kit, the B&M ripper shifter, and some sort of cat-back exhaust, along with the air box you are doing!
