Author Topic: Ongoing Rotor Saga.........Advice????

I guess it's my turn to be plagued by the rotor problems that everyone else has had. My dealer is refusing to cover the warped rotors under warranty however. The service manager said that my rotors are warped due to excessive temperature. I said that rotors should be designed to deal with excessive temperature (I have never raced my car, just "heavy" street driving). They said that they can remachine them for $400. I said NO.

What should I do now? I'm thinking of getting the Powerslots which cost about that much for a set of new ones. ThunderRacing has a package that I'm thinking of getting with the powerslots, Hawk brake pads, stainless steel brake lines, and brake fluid for $587. I may just get that. Has anybody had experience with them? Any other suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated!

this sounds like you should get in touch with GM since you are getting nowhere with the dealership. i have been complaining about my brakes making a thumping noise when i step on them for he past 6000 miles and they tell me that only 1 rotor out of them all is a little ripply but its nothing to worry about. how can 1 rotor get like that unless the caliper is not working right or it came from the factory like that......hey we should get intouch with scott settlemire and see what he says!

That service manager cannot prove that the rotors were warped from excessive heat. He does not seem like he is looking for customer satisfaction. I worked in a GM dealer for 12 years and have resurfaced hundreds of rotors under warranty from warping and never once did I try to blame the cause on excessive heat. I just did the job and went onto the next warranty job.

If you are still covered under warranty, demand that the turning of the rotors, better yet, replacement rotors be done at no cost to you. 'Excessive Heat'... Ah, Yaaaahhh, Like... Helllloooowwww! What does GM expect from a car with a 300hp+ engine???? GM has a major problem with their rotors as most of us here have witnessed. My factory rotors warpped ( under warranty), but couldn't be bothered with the hassle of taking the SS to the Dealer ( but that's just me ). Like I mentioned, if you are under warranty, demand the problem be fixed at no cost to you. $400? The Dealer is trying to pull a fast one on you me thinks! I really don't understand why Dealers are so hesitant to do warranty work when it gets charged back to GM anyway...

Thanks for the advice! I'm definitely giving that dealer the finger. I told him about the service bulletin however, he didn't even give it a second glance. I'm wondering if it's worth all of this hassle........should I just drop $400 and get some KVR or Powerslot rotors? Anyway, I'm going back to pick up the car right now. I'll definitely be complaining the whole time.

I agree, Service Departments usually love warranty work, unless it requires diagnosis then the techs don't want to touch it. It must have to do with what rate they can charge Chevy for the job, if they got paid for an hour and it took them 15 minutes they would do them all day long. $400.00 is way too much! I would call Chevrolet Customer Service.

Exactly! I was in the same position as you with my warped factory rotors. If I took the SS to the Dealer, they might have given me a hassle about doing it under warranty. To make matters worse, the new rotors would only end up being warped too! So, to avoid all the hassle, I spent $500 CND ( about $300 US ) on KVR cross-drilled rotors and KVR carbon fiber pads. I replaced just the front rotors and pads as its usually only the fronts that get warped as they do the majority of the braking.

As a service adviser at a chevy dealership and seeing the problem GM has with there "top hat rotors" on ALL their product line.If you speak loud enough,they will take care of your rotors under the basic warranty,36months or 36,000 miles which ever comes first.They know they have a problem.My other vehicle,besides my SS is a 2000
malibu with 25,000 miles on the clock and the Dealer has installed (4) set of rotors since new and it needs another set of rotors now,because it still POUNDS when braking at highway speeds.If anyone has a problem in getting the Dealer to Act in the favor to resolve the problem,don't hesitate
to call Chevy Customer Service at 1-800-222-1020
and scream loud enough.You'll get your way with them.

Well, I just picked up my car at the dealer. They did Nothing with my power loss problem. They did Nothing with my rotors. However, they charged me $37.50 just for inspecting the rotors! I told them that I wasn't going to pay and had a nice long conversation with the service manager. Nonetheless, due to my age probably, he gave me a lecture on "high speed driving" and "brake abuse" and said that this is not covered under the warranty. Furthermore, according to him, the rotors are not covered at all, just like oil or brake pads. Of course, I asked for a customer satisfaction survey. I also got that 800 number. I plan on giving them a call on monday. But, I'm thinking of just replacing them....this is just too much of a hassle. And I have finals next week! Great!

If your area is like ours, there are over a dozen Chevrolet dealers. Any of them should be able to service your warranty claim.
Stick to it and be firm, but polite.

I wouldn't take that crap from that service manager. A dealer replaced rotors on my 99 SS twice, turned them once, didn't work so they replaced them. The replaced ones were crap also, so they replaced them again. All this was done under warranty, so get GM involved if you have to. When you get them replaced, you can save up for a good set, at your leisure.
