my 98 drives straight, but over sharp bumps in the road has a loud metal to metal or hammer to metal sound in the left front strut area. has 51000 miles on original SLP equipment. also the previous owner did not rotate the tires and the tread has "chunked" or is un- even. potenza re70s. this seems to cause tire hum at about 35-40.any body ever experince these problems?any solutions?

Sounds like typical symptoms of a front end that needs to be overhauled. The clunking may be a bad ball joint or one of the bushings, the cupping is a symptom of bad alignment, out of balance and probably worn shocks.

Get that front end checked and rotate your tires.
Check my sig - I have no clunking in the front at all.
