I just found out that a glass anti-rattle part at the top of the LH door on our car was broken off, allowing the window to "bang" around in the door, especially when the window is down, and the door is closed. If it breaks off, it will scratch, marr, or wear a spot in the door glass. Ours wore a hole in the glass, about 2 inches from the top, near the rear. [Frown]
You can inspect for it with the door panel in place by just rolling down the window, and looking for a bright gold colored metal piece(there are two per door). It should have a black fuzzy piece attatched to it which is supposed to rub on the glass to keep it from rattling/banging. If it damaged or broken......replace it ASAP, or it WILL destroy your glass. They are a very weak part, and I expect they will be a problem on most cars in the future. Just a head up for everybody!
I have 4 on order(3 for spares!), and will post the part number later this week when they show up.

My 30th Anniversary has a slight rattle in the drivers door glass with the window down and closing the door. I always wanted to adjust that felt coated guide and never did. Maybe it is loose or broken as well. Thanks for the heads up!

There isn't exactly a "hole" in the glass....it's just a very prominent, etched/scratched spot.

I had the unfortunate experience with the same problem. My only ray of light with the issue was tiniting the windows but unfortunately if you really look you can see the scratch it made....... [Frown]

Does this issue only apply to convertibles? I still am not clear on what exactly the issue is here; perhaps a more detailed explanation?

Yup...this happened to my 97 RS after 36009 miles. The bastards wouldn't warranty it, so I bought the part and did it myself. I'm still a little bitter about that.

Yikes! I'll have to check it out when i get home tonight. I have another problem with my drivers, I have a track goign the whole way upn the window about 2 inches wide. I've had the window adjust once already because it was going real slow when it got to the top and almost stopped! and I thought the grease would go away after it was adjusted but it's back and the window is going slow again! I believe I have read on a forum that there is a TSB on this item.

Here's what was broken....it's the goldish colored piece of metal that should have a window fuzzy attached. Ours broke and etched the window.

 -

Here's what it SHOULD look like, intact.

 -

And here's how to do a visual inspection on yours without taking the door panel off.

 -

What alerted Steve to it was a clattering sound when he closed the door. That may have been the broken part rattling around in the bottom of the door. It may also have been the sound of the glass hitting the sharp, broken part of the metal piece.
It's an easy fix, but we're none too happy about the damage to the glass. Our car has 17K miles on it, and most are freeway miles. This part should not have broken so easily, or so soon.

Check yours!

Thanks for showing us what to look for. Btw, if your window is etched, won't that go under the warranty of the car so they can replace the glass? Just wondering. Thanks

yeah, I'm scared once my warranty is up everything will go wrong with mine, my friend has a 300ZX TT and is getting everything repaired/replaced before the warranty is up in 2 months, haha. But hey, it's a Camaro and I love it adn wouldn't trade it for anything. I just have to get this window adjusted again I guess. [Cool]

Even if it was still under warranty, there is not one single dealership in the area (over a dozen of 'em to choose from) that I would trust w/our SS.

The horror stories we've heard makes me shudder.

there are actually 2 dealerships (quite large chevy ones) that I do trust. The one had done an excellent job with repairing my SS after my accident. The only complaint was the time it took, and I've heard it from a few, but heck, if they're gonna do a great job and not screw up, time has no value then! Although 4 weeks was a loooong time without my SS!!!

BTW, you hang around your computer all day? hehe...Of course, I'm guilty to...that's what I'm do when I'm bored at work. (I work at a bank) Sometimes I find myself refreshing the screen waiting for someone to say something, lol....

The GM part number for the piece in question is called a "stabilizer", and its GM #10257988. List price is $7.63. I ordered 4, just to get them while they are available, and before they are discontinued. The hardest part of the entire job is getting the door panel to release from the door.

On another note, does anybody have a "creaking" sound when they open their door all the way? Ours started making this noise about the same time as the glass problem started. It appears its the front to rear door crossbar where it attatches to the rear latch plate. If you put your hand on the latch assy, you can feel it creak as the door comes near the all-the-way-open position? Sound familiar? I dont like it.

Matt- you have to go up to the top of your screen, click on "My Profile" and then "edit profile" There is a box there where you can put your signature in and such. Also, to put your pic in there, you have to use the "UBB Code" the board uses, go here:
http://www.chirpthird.com/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=ubb_code_page
That explains how you can insert pics! Finally, before you post your pic you have to check the "show signature" box at the bottom of the screen.
Any other questions, feel free to ask any of us! [Cool]

Thanks much for the info and pics.

Would it be possible to get a detailed write up on how exactly you remove the door panel and what to watch out for, etc.?

Thanks again,

Ok, here is how to remove your door panels: roll window all the way down. Remove the small triangle piece at the top front of the door. It is retained by a phillips head screw, then gently pull STRAIGHT out on it. There are some alignment pins at the bottom, take note, as they will have to go into the holes in the door upon installation. Also, note the foam piece just behind/at the bottom of the triangle piece. Remove this and reinstall when done. Remove the 3 large phillips head screws in the armrest base (2 from above in the handle pocket, 1 from below/in front).

Remove the slider lock knob by inserting a small screwdriver behind the knob from the front, and GENTLY pry outwards. It will pop off easily.

Remove the 2 phillips head screws (one in the top, one up under the armrest pull handle) that retain the window/door lock/mirror switch bezel. Here is the tricky part.....you CAN remove the switch housing itself from the larger bezel by prying it away from the bezel, but mine was stuck so I did it the hard way and left it attatched. Unplug the 3 wire connectors for the switches (if your car has those options!), and unplug the light from its socket. Next, unsnap the bezel from the door panel by gently pulling/prying, then pull the door handle to the "open" position, and wiggle the bezel away from the door panel. It will take some finesse, but it will come out.

Now that everything is disconnected, pull UP on the door panel to release the retainer tabs. They are NOT like older GM vehicles where you pulled straight out to release some clips. These are part of the door panel, and you will DESTROY the door panel if you pull out and not up. It can be kind of tough, but it will come up if you wiggle it enough. There are those retainers all the way around the panel, so be careful! They are kind of shaped like a hook, and will release when lifted up about an inch, and THEN outward.

The guide you are replacing is held in with one bolt. Remove the bolt and guide. Roll the window all the way up, then install the new guide over the plastic guide hook on the glass. You will feel the guide center on the hook. Tighten the bolt. Plug your window switch in and check your window operation while everything is apart. Also, check your regulator to make sure its not damaged.

Reassembly:
Roll window back down, install door panel, making sure you install all of the hooks, and also hook the top of the panel over the top of the door inner structure. Install the bezel, switches, door lock knob, and triangle piece. Clean the window, and enjoy your handywork! [Big Grin] [Big Grin]
