What is the BEST brand of gears? What is the best install kit? Is the TA Girdle a good idea? What is the best gear lube, I presume a synthetic, and what slip additive to get? What else do I need, besides reprogramming?

I like US Gear made by Strange. Factory GM gears are the quietest gears. I have had concerns with Motive Gears and Richmonds seem to be noisy. I just got the installation kit from DTS when I ordered the gear. I use Mobil 1 synthetic gear lube and have had no concerns or noise.My son's 3.73 was intenionally set up .030 tighter side bearing load for use with N.O.S. and that helps stop the possibility of the ring gear walking on a hard load.The T/A girdle should help keep the bearing caps in place. Hi Kevin, Richmond gears tend to be the noisiest as they are cut a bit more square than other brands. This also makes them a bit sturdier. As far as the additive is concerned, use only the GM additive. An alternative to reprogramming the PCM for the gear swap is try and get your mitts on a used HPP3, get the SLP speedometer processor. It's simple to do and works great. Besides, it was 2/3 the cost of reprogramming the PCM and I can reprogram the SLP unit if necessary just by playing with the DIP switches. I didn't want to shell out a lot of $ just to reprogram the PCM for a gear change. If you're reprogramming other stuff (like the fans for a 160 degree T-stat) then it might be worthwhile, but a used HPP3 would be the best way to go, IMHO.
