Make sure there is no conflict witht he Comm port. I had to unistall the infra red port on my laptop and make sure that apps that use the comm port haven't taken it. Apps like Hotsync for a Palm Pilot have to be shut down.

Good luck.

Sounds like a conflict with the comm port some how.

Thanks Dan, you're right about the palm, I went so far as to remove the software. It initially said com port one in use by another program, and autotap showed up on com 2 but said no autotap scan tool found on port. After I removed the palm, it sowed up on one with the same message. [Roll Eyes]

I've not used that software/hardware but you may need to go into the BIOS setup on your notebook and take the COM port out of 'auto' mode. You may need to assign it an IRQ and address. IRQ 4 is for COM1 and IRQ 3 is for COM2. The address is usually assigned automatically based on the IRQ you chose. I'm assuming you have a 'real' 9 pin serial port and not a USB to serial adapter plugged into the notebook.

With the newer operating systems and hardware we have gotten further and further from the point where a program can 'own' the serial port and have hardware level access to it. What operating system is your notebook running?

Then too, I may have absolutely no idea what I'm talking about either! [Big Grin] [Roll Eyes]

Rich, I have the same laptop with NT.

Go into Thinkpad Configuation. If they didnt alter the default profile, you need to disable the infrared port, and enable the com port.

I had the same problem with my GPS receiver until I did that.

Did you test connected to the car or standalone? The port wont see anything if it isnt attached to the car.

one more thing... make sure that little internal battery is working. (clock stay set when off AC power for a while?) when my battery went, those thinkpad settings reset to default on me.

I tested connected to the car. It's holding the config, so I think the battery is OK.

This is non-standard for COM1 but it is probably your modem on IRQ 14. Sorry about you having NT instead of Windows 2000 Pro or XP Pro.
[Big Grin]

Anyway, just as a test, can you make your COM1 serial port to be at IRQ 4? That might help.

Steve

Thanks, I did change com1 to IRQ4 and com2 to IRQ3 and still no luck. I think I'm going to reinstall the software with new IRQ settings. The helpdesk for autotap is only m-f 9-5 so it won't be easy to get help from them.

Keep those thoughts coming! [Smile]

OK gang, got it nailed. Looks like Chris was right (thank you sir [wolfie] ), and then since the software had learned the bad config, it had to be reloaded (delete and reinstall). Thanks for your help team.

Now...any auto tap experts with some pointers...I'm looking at a lot of silent guages and flat graphs! [Razz]

I'm just learning it BUT, I bring up the various gauges, using just numeric, that I want to monitor. Saving the file, I can later take the time to review it in graph format, EXCEL, whatever. I created a config file for general analyizing/recording and I'm going to create a seperate config file for more specialized playback. The numeric guages are good for recording but suck for playback, it runs about 2-3 times real time, so don't blink.
