My car is at the Dealer right now for various warranty issues. i noticed that the paint on the rear bumper has peeled/blistered off. It is coming off right above the passenger side tail pipe tip. my question is, has any one else experienced problems with this? i have not heard of anyone having this problem with the SLP LM or other aftermarket exhaust systems.
The dealer also said that it would not be covered under warranty work
suggestions please

Sounds like another dealer trying to get out of a warranty claim. I'd keep pressing the dealer. The only way he shouldn't pay is if the bumper was damaged during installation of the pipe, or if the pipe is rubbing.

The pipe is not rubbing. i have about a 1 to 1-1/2 in. clearance. the exhaust was installed by and authorized SLP installer (Steve), and the exhaust itself is made by SLP, who is an authorized Dealer of parts for GM. i think the dealer is trying to say that since it is technically an aftermarket system, that it is too hot (without the muffler) and blisters the paint. the service manager did admit that he has not seen this before. but he also says that he has not seen any SS's "modified" to this extent. I told him that the exhaust should not get that hot that far back in the system to peel off paint, and that i have never seen this before. he is going to call the Regional GM manager to see what he says and will call me back. I read a post over at the SLP forum about someone's LM exhaust that was installed really close to the bumper (which later he fixed) I noticed on my new LM that it's about a 1" drop below the bumper. I dont think the exhaust should have anyhting to do with the paint doing that. If the factory exhaust was still on it probaly would have done the dame thing! Like
John said, if you did something to alterate to make it peel (which you didn't) then it wouldn't be covered, but the exhaust has nothing to do with the warranty of the paint. Unless in a rare case that the pipe somehow gets so hot that it melts the plastic or soemthing. I'd insist the dealer fix it under warranty. Keep us posted!

I belevie on SLP's website all theire parts (bolt on's, probably not including headers/cams) that their parts are DIRCT GM replacement parts, adn since SLP pretty much 'makes' the SS I see no reason why it shouldn't be covered under a GM warranty. my 2 cents Posts: 2651 | From: Enola (Harrisburg Area), Pennsylvania | Registered: Jan 2002

no, just the paint is peeling off, the plastic is not melted whatsoever. not even any black marks from the heat or and discolorization of the plastic under the paint.

Might just be coincidence that it's cracking/peeling in that spot then. IMO, I dont think it gets got enough to do such a thing like that. Damn cranky & picky dealers

Your right suburban is a good store.... now if it was one of the portland metro guys....
So are you still having a problem? You have pointed out that the exhaust is not touching the facia? If that doesn't work I have a contact over there (in portland) and can make a call or two. Keep me posted and give me a few days to get an answer for ya.

I have had my LM for about 6 weeks and have seen no problems with the bumper. The SS is my daily driver if this info helps.

Mine have been on from right after receiving the car, no problems here. The LM dual-dual tips come out exactly where the OEM optional dual-dual exhaust tips do.

Nate, ...I can understand (however don't totally agree) where a dealer may be reluctant to cover the paint under warranty IF (a big "if" here) it is determined the pipes being too close were the cause. Since the Loud Mouth (LM) system was not a factory/dealer/SLP "orderable option", the dealer may stand by the claim that it's not factory/dealer equipment and therefore refuse coverage. Your challenge (in my opinion) is to convince the dealer that the LM is no hotter than another factory/dealer offered system, AND that it was not mounted closer to the bumber fascia than a factory/dealer available system. The Chambered system (Berger, Tom Henry, etc.) IS a dealer installed system, ...and like the LM, is not a true "muffler". I can not see where the LM would be any hotter than the Chambered system. IF you can show the dealer (have them contact Berger or Tom Henry) that your system was installed correctly (as I'm sure it was, ...Steve SLP authorized) AND that other systems similar to it (ie Chambered) do not have problems, ...there's a chance they'll cover the paint. Hopefully it will work out....

My LM has been on for over a year and has no problems like this. I have put the car cover on after driving and the tips come in contact with the cover but haven't burned up the cover..the tips just don't get hot enough to do damage like that. A catback isn't going to make the exhaust any hotter...there's no way this is LM related unless the tips are touching the paint.

i have had my LM on my car for about a year. The pipes are not touching the bumper. i have enough room under there, that i can get a car washing cotton spounge between the bumper and the pipes. i need to call the dealer today on my break and see what they say.
MM, i may need your services if my dealer wont comply. They do have a stock SS on their lot. maybe we can run both up to operating temp. and put a heat gun to the pipes. Ragss, i'll mention the chambered exhaust the berger does to them and see what they say.
thanks for everyones feedback

well, good news. i just got off the phone with the dealer and they said that they would paint the bumper just this one time. it is in the paint shop right now.
another question: will the LM be too hot and blister paint that is newly painted? (not enough time to cure properly).

Nate, was the painted peeling over both pipes or just one?

I think he said just one. In addition, when i got home from school (30 min drive) I felt my bumper as soon as I got out and it was hardly warm at all!(exhuast is 1 1/4" from bumper) So it CAN"T be because of the exhaust. It must have been a defect or something, that just happened to be in the area. Glad to hear the good news though! Posts: 2651 | From: Enola (Harrisburg Area), Pennsylvania | Registered: Jan 2002

yeah, it was just peeling off the one side. thanks Dan for your little test of the warmth of the bumper. looks like everything will be ok. i just hope that the dealer does a good job with the painting. so i don't have to take it back in again for over-spray or other defects.

Glad all is going to work out.... I figured it would. Anyways I would make sure they remove the bumper cover when they paint it. That way there is no chance of overspray etc.

oh shoot, i didn't think to ask them that. when i got off the phone with the service manager, he said that it was already in the paint shop. hopfully their paint dept. has enough common sense to do that.

Hey Nate.......glad to hear that Suburban is taking care of your problem. I would have been surprised and disappointed if they didn't, as they have always backed up anything that went wrong on my SS. And as far as the exhaust being hotter just because you have a loudmouth.......that's hard for me to believe it could make enough difference to really matter.
Your SS is over at Al's for paint, right? I wouldn't worry too much, they will take good care of you over there. They've had mine twice and did a great job both times.

Hi Nate, Glad to here they are fixing it for you.
I was concerned about the heat, when I put on the Corsa system, when I initially installed it the tips were an about an inch from the bumber cover. I then cruised around for an hour or so on a 85 degree day, stopped, got out and felt the cover and it was nearly to hot to touch. It had not harmed the paint but, I was not comfortable with that, so I moved it down another 3/4 of an inch. Now there is almost NO heat felt on the cover.

glad they are taking care of me too. but at first they were not going to do it. i had to have the service manager contact the GM rep for this area to approve it. Posts: 1579 | From: Portland, OR. | Registered: May 2001

Take it to Wilsonville Chevrolet and ask about it. An aftermarket exhaust will NOT affect the paint unless the mixture is so lean that engine damage is done ... and yours is NOT damaged. Sounds like a lawsuit to me.
Bet it is Carr Chevy. They're a bunch of idiots!
