I have 6 - 100 watt incadescent ceiling mounted lights as basic garage lighting and for working, sorry, tinkering I have a portable 2 head halogen light and a flourscent trouble light.

Right now I have the regular incadescent ceiling mounted lights. As I'm always puttering with the cars in the garage, at sometime I'd like to install flourescent lighting. There seems to be a number of different flourescent blubs available (soft, daylight, etc.) to give just the right light effect. I'd also mount the lights above and beside the vehicle bays (on the walls and on the ceiling in between the bays), as well as on the ceiling in the center of each bay, to minimize shadows.

I have currently 4 florescent fixtures that have two 4' bulbs each,2 500 watt quartz halogen lights and 2 regular trouble lights and 1 12v florescent trouble light. The garage has plenty of lighting. At my old house ,I had 12 florescent fixtures with two 4' bulbs each and it was like daytime in there.I painted several car,so having good light was a must.Still have all of those fixtures in the rafters. I have flourescent lights in the ceiling and I hate them. Maybe I have cheapies but I can't see with them. I replaced on of them with a regular fixture just over one of my cars. I am always using a flashlight and work lights. I like have the heater though!!

My garage is 32x26,I used a total of 10 (double 8ft.) flourescent fixtures. I installed the High Output, Low temp fixtures (about $44 each at Home Depot). (The low temp fixtures/bulbs 'start' better than regular bulbs/fixtures in cold temp) I wired the lights through 4 circuits to allow turning on certain ones and they are fine. Definitely enough light, and bright enough. Some of the ballasts produce a little noise, but not enough to be a problem.

My detached garage is 25X50. It has 4 bays. I have a 2 tube X4 ft flourscent fixture on each side,front and back of each car. It is like daylight when all of them are turned on. I have a switch for each bay. My garage at the house is 24X24.It has 4 of the afore mentioned fixtures.

You'll still only have 6 light bulbs 4 of wich turn off when the openers time out .

I don't have a garage but my dad's garage has two flourescent fixtures with 4 bulbs in each. I don't know the wattage but they are the 4 ft. long bulbs. They put out a lot of light but it can get a little dark on the sides and rear of the car since the fixtures are in the front of the garage. He also has a two bulb florescent light over his workbench (same as the others just half the size). There's also a trouble light that pulls down from the center of the garage with a 100 watt bulb in it.

I have the bulbs in the openers.....and one florescent hanging over the Hawk. It's not great, but it works.

You need LOTS of light (sunlight is VERY bright, even when cloudy). A couple fixtures ain't gonna cut it!
In a typical 25 x 25 garage, I would have AT LEAST 6 twin tube 48" flourecents (8 or more would be better). Set up the power for 2 or more circuits (switches) so you don't have to turn 'em all on when not needed.
If you can mount two twin tube units along each side wall (if your space & layout permit it), & have them switched separately.... that helps out A LOT with suspension & under car work.
For the ceiling lights ..... be sure to position the forward ones so that they are IN FRONT of the open hood..... NOT above it.
