Good morning all!

Just doing my usual Monday morning routine of submitting paperwork and browsing the latest news while sipping my coffee..... and I found this article about Ricers. It almost made me wince about how much this guy spent on his Cavalier, and what others commonly do. Maybe I'm hopelessly biased, but I just don't understand why some people choose to pour so much cash into an economy car. I'm curious as to what anyone else thinks?

Here's the article on MSNBC:

I can't say that I like what they do to their cars, personally, but I think I understand why. They basically buy a car they can afford and then spend gobs of money to make it look special and attract attention (easier to finance a small purchase and then spend all extra cash on "upgrades"). There have always been "ricers" (people who spend extraordinary amounts of money to make ordinary cars look like crap) as far back as I can remember. Nowadays, there are just more of them. I think it's all about attracting attention to yourself like getting your eyeball pierced or painting your hair blue. When I was a kid, wearing grungy clothes and growing your hair long was all it took to attract negative attention from the old fogeys and positive attention from your peers. Now there doesn't seem to be an end to what the younger generation will do to attract attention. At least with the small cars they're working on they can use their baggy pants as a car cover (except the wing, of course.) [Wink]

I don't think a lot of those spoiled little brats work anywhere.....they seem to get it handed to them by mommy & daddy who feel guilty for never spending any time with them.

I agree with Teri. They are spoiled. I think a lot of kids have parents that equate spoiling their kids to having a good relationship with them.

the sad thing is that he could have spent $30k on a new SS and put $12k towards upgrades that would have given him much more HP and quicker 1/4 mile times. not to mention he would have a much better looking vehicle. ah well. [Roll Eyes] [ergh]

It is the true idea of using what you have. When I was growing up, a 1981 v6 camaro was what I had money for. A chevy cavalier is the same price now as the camaro was then. As for adding to the car, by the time I sold the 81 it had gone through 2 engines 3 transmisions 1 rear end, 3 sets of gears(backlash sucks)and a laundry list other parts. I don't personaly like the compact cars there working with, but give credit to people for there mechanical talent( even if misplaced). Some of these kids are making 250 plus out of 4 cylinders. Watch a SEMA show, front wheel drive running in the 7s.

Ditto here [Big Grin] , ...and put 260K miles on it before I sold it, ...with zero mods. [Smile]

As for these kids with these ricers, ...It's not my style, but as they say, ...to each his own.
Yet when in college, paying 12K for a car, ...and adding 30K in mods ...??? I'm with everyone else, ...Where do they get the money [confused] [confused] [confused]
Mommy and Daddy must be doing OK...

Hmm... maybe I shouldn't be the one to talk!

Here is a picture of my old 96 V6:

 -

It had the RK Sport ground effects kit and super wing. I thought it was ricey, but I least I had the RK Sport supercharger (6psi) which left plenty of Stang owners wondering what hit them [Big Grin]

But that was well under 6k worth of investments. But 30k??? Jeez.
