If you've been browsing the "Engine" forum over at LS1.com, you've read the saga of how I took my 00 SS into the dealer for a noisy window and a small coolant drip, and ended up with a new LS1 under warranty. (If you haven't heard the story, ask me!)

The new LS1 shipped today, and I'm waiting for an ETA. Will take photos once it arrives and comes out of the crate.

One thing, Chevrolet stands behind its warranty, at least in my case! [Smile]

My service manager was mis-informed about shipping date by his Parts Manager. It turns out the new LS1 motor was shipped last week and, in fact, arrived at the dealership this afternoon. I'm swinging by there first thing tomorrow AM and take some photos of the engine sitting in its crate before it gets installed. The plan is to begin pulling my old motor tomorrow. Probably drop in the new mill and button things up on Thursday or Friday. [Big Grin] [Big Grin]

Well, it seems like I may be keeping that car, now I am working so it seems that when it goes on for ring job, it might be a very good time to do a few little extra's. And I think it is fast now! It is exciting.

Hmmmmmmm....

Are they still going to let you keep the engine or are they going to ship it back and let the engine plant do the failure analysis? If it's truly a freak failure, I'd think they'd want it back to find out and make sure they won't possibly be looking at something that might occur more frequently as more and more LS-1's in service start to accumulate higher mileage. On the other hand, a nice fresh LS-1 should give you some peace of mind for quite a while longer... [Big Grin] [Big Grin]

Just curious, are they giving you a completely buttoned up motor ready for accessory install, or is it just the short-block? Will they be transferring the intake from old to new? The heads?

Well, I'm simplifying, they didn't just say "the Heck with it." In fact the Service Manager had to really document all their repair and diagnostic attempts on this problem before getting GMPP approval for the warranty replacement. The problem is a "freak" occurrence, and GM Tech Support was stumped after going through every known diagnostic procedure. What happened was the replacement of a coolant tube that's under the intake manifold. When the manifold was reinstalled and everything puit back together, cylinders #5 and #7 were skipping. The #8 starting skipping off idle as well. Nothing they could do would get the engine to run on all eight cylinders, which ALL had good spark, fuel and good compression!! (Please refrain from offering possible diagnostic ideas, because I have 4 pages of them from the guys at LS1.com, and anyway it's a done deal.)

Yes, it is expensive, but the dealership's Service Manager is a real stand-up guy who values customer satisfaction.

It's hard to say where the old motor is going. When the problem first came up, I was on the shop floor talking to Mike the Tech, and he mentioned that he had done an engine replacement at 22,000 miles for a C5 Vette, and the old engine was sitting under his bench. I asked, "didn't GM want it back?" and he said No, no one had asked for it. So, maybe they won't demand the engine back. If so, I'll get a truck from somewhere and haul it away.

I saw the motor this morning, still in its crate -- what a pretty sight. It's a fully assembled long block, without intake or exhaust manifolds, plugs or wires, but with water pump, pulleys, balancer, etc. I'm scrambling now to buy a used but mint set of Edelbrock nickel-chromed shorty headers that I passed on last week because I thought the new motor would come with new exhaust manifolds bolted up. Would love to put on LTs, but the dealer would certainly balk at installing non-smog legal parts during a warranty install. But CARB-certified shorties will just bolt on in minutes when the motor's out, no labor charges to me!

Hey, if you have any leftover parts (like if it was a complete assy line install type of crate motor), i would be interested them. THings like coils, wiring harness, starter, ALL of the sensors, intake manifold, etc. Please let me know!

I knew there was more to it that "the heck with it!" Since it's an expensive warranty claim, I am sure that GM will dive really deep into WHY it happened. There are special departments just for this. Oh what fun it is to learn about these things in my Operations Management and Marketing Classes!

Anywho, glad to see the General is taking care of you and is going well! [blob]

I'll see what's left over and let you know. Maybe you might give me a reminder e-mail in a week or two so I don't forget. Just looking at the motor in its crate, I can see that it's missing the intake and exhaust manifolds, which would have to be reused from my old engine, but other parts might be redundant (I can also see that the new motor comes with water pump, pulleys, balancer, etc., so those would be available perhaps.

One thing's for sure, I am VERY happy that I opted for an extended (6 yr/60K mile) warranty when I bought the Camaro! I can safely say that it's more than paid for itself. [Big Grin]
