I'm one of the old farts on the board and I do more lurking than posting, but I have to say this. If the new Mustang performs as good as it looks, GM better get on the ball. I've owned several camaros in my life and thought I would never say this, but the blue oval is calling, if GM can't do better than the SS concept. I certainly hope that Scott will ensure the uncompromising enthusiest for which there is granted a limited market is not forgotten. Flame suit on, just my 2 cents for what it is worth.

yeah, GM is takin it on the chin lately. probably will so for a few more years.
Everything is cyclical. GM owned the HP wars for almost a decade... its Ford's turn for now. To quote a certain person regarding Ford's upped performance... "it's about time".
GTO is the first round of return fire from GM.
Lets hope the C6 is a real burner. It will have to be.
In the long run, I think it's a good thing, competetion brings out the best.

.The Mustang IS running circles around the General and will pull a lot of people away unless GM can get an act together. Being that you dont bite the hand that feeds you you have to over look a lot of stuff.........BUT you can still dream of owning one .
The new SS I can see an after market mod to get rid of that UGLY chrome piece in the back to make it more eye pleasing Posts: 3091 | From: Canton Mi. | Registered: Oct 2002

I'm not even close to being brand loyal either.....to me you buy what you like. why be loyal to a car company that does not produce what you want????

The first pictures I saw of the new Mustang were of the red convertible ................ and I was not impressed at all ................ but the silver fastback is another story ............ that's a great looking car!!!!!
Ford really seems to have it's act together right now.
Besides, I would love to get a new GT40 if I could afford it .......... which I can't ............ and never will

I didn't like the new vert, but that coupe got some nice designs to it with performance to back it up. Just hope the general will stop letting Ford run circles. I do like the new mustang, but I dont think I would buy it, unless I have the money and GM still has nothing new out. We'll see...might take a couple years. Here's hoping!!!!

Judging by the crowds around the concept vert, the Cobra and the new Mach1, a lot of folks are thinking! I like the looks of the GTO, but GM will have to do some other stuff before it gets really high approval ratings from me. Like adding a working ram air hood. Right now it looks pretty tame! It may have an LS-1 but you'd never know from the outside!

I too like the mustang coupe look, it looks great, overall. The fastback looks really sharp. On the other hand, the convertible with that ugly targa bar is way wrong! It loses the entire look/feel. Just my 02 cents.

I guess I must be part of the minority here. I really like the looks of the Chevrolet SS ... especially when imagining it as a 2 door with a chunk cut out of the middle.
I don't dislike the the Mustang fastback and agree the 'vert is horrible.
What I hate is that the Ford diehards can expect to find the Mustang in a showroom in the foreseeable future .... us Chevy folks get "cues" as to what the future "might" hold.
I think Bill Ford's impact at Ford is paying far greater dividends than Bob Lutz at GM. Case in point ... GT(40) vs. Cien .... both darlings of last years show .... one fasttracked ... one shelved

I love the look of the new Mustang! I was realy impressed when I saw those pics yesterday. That's gotta be the best looking production car in America since I have been old enough to care.
Agreed, the vert is not as cool as the fastback, but dang, they got it right. Great mix of retro and modern with a supercharger!
I like all cars and I've had 1 Ford in the past, an F-100 P/U...so not a muscle car but it was a great hot rod. I would buy that Mustang....but money and the fun of all my SS mods will stop me.
I don't like the Chevy SS....it's on a nice path for a street rod look, but they just missed IMO.

I like the look of the new Coupe, they did a good job.
Now, if the Fords could run the Detroit Lions (they own them) like they are designing cars lately, we might be able to win some games. Posts: 1296 | From: Saginaw, MI | Registered: May 2000

It's a 2-seater. . .which limits the number of buyers. GM can still keep pace with a new muscle car from any one of its divisions. It looks like they ae going with the Pontiac Division with the new GTO. . .I know it is not quite hot enough, but I guarantee you, they can put the Z06 engine in it on a short notice. Voila! Back in business!

Am I the only one who dislikes the 2005 Mustang? The concept drawing looked good, but the 'vert is ugly. I like the looks of the Mach 1, but not the 2005 concept. Just my opinion. Posts: 322 | From: Fort Polk, LA | Registered: Feb 2002

Ditto! The convert did NADA for me but the Coupe is a different story.. 2005 will probably be when I start looking for a replacement. Hopefully GM will have something by then...

I'm GM fan always have been but working for ford I have realized a few things. They realized they missed the ball in the 90s with performance. It's not going to happen now. IE
05 mustang 400hp + new lightning 500hp tbird will be SC now and close to 400 GT40 500 absolute minimum 427 concept 590 just to name a few.
The HP war is going to get interesting, if GM doesn't join the party a lot of people will get tired of waiting for GM. Words only go so far.
And my .02 cents on the new mustang Concept is that it is ugly but thank goodness that is NOT the final product.

I'm a finance/marketing major and based upon my knowledge, we all know GM is the largest auto maker in the world. We also know that they will do anything to stay on top of the game. Marketing for Ford right now is working quite well and I beleive GM will definately stay ahead of the game, whether we know it (public knowledge) or not (insder knowledge). I dont fear for GM. Real soon we'll start seeing some more designs coming to public knowledge. FOr example, the GTO, yeah yeah, it isn't what we totally see as a muscle car, but times are changing. Soon enough, the General will dish out what we have been wanting/waiting for. Perhaps more than we can imagine. GM seems to be targeting a broader market in their performance vehicles and not such a narrow segment (for example, look what happened to the f-body). Any of that make any sense? lol, sorry I'm quite bored at work. Soon enough! We'll just ahve to wait in the meantime.

I am a hardcore Chevy fan and would never switch. On the otherhand the horsepower the Fords are producing is appealing, but there is more to a car than just power. The '05 Mustang convert concept may have lots of go, but lacks show, although the fastback isn't bad. While on the subject, the current Mustang is still milking a 20+ years old chassis, it's about time they do something.
Back to what's important though, let's not forget the Corvette is still in a league by itself and promises more fuel for the fire in the future. The SSR, which is positioned to be a mean machine, and has presold all units. The Pontiac Solstice, a 2 seat sports car, and the G6 an SC 2 seater. Plus, the GTO. The Caddy XLR a 2 seat roadster with ZO6 type power.
With that, there is still hope for 5th Gen. F-body.

How much is the Mustang going to be. Price is a factor. GM has some great performance for a great price. The Z06 is much more than HP! GM seems to be making it's money where the money is being spent. That is SUV's and trucks. Not good for us but it is good business.
I'll have my SS for a very long time, where the general is going to have to sell me will be when I am ready to replace the Z06. Tha could be a while.
Having said that, I like the Mustang Coupe.

Well, I sure wish Fbodfather would have gotten his way for the F-body as far as a retro 69'ish style. Cause I think that would have sold like hotcakes!
I too like the new 2005 Mustang Coupe. I even like the new Lightning. I also like the new GTO and I would like to be able to buy one as well.
