As you may have read here, I've been in the process of maintenance on brakes and a new set of tires.

I had my GT drilled rotors turned successfully on the advice of the company.

Still wondering what people are using as replacement pads. I understand the GM Durastops are pretty good, if a little pricy. Apparently the regular Camaro pads throw off a lot of dust.

As far as tires are concerned, got a quote of $1210. for a set of 4 BFG G-Force KD's, installed, balanced and lifetime warranty. Research says this is a really good deal, very close to wholesale.

I wasn't lucky enough to find a set of "blem" like DaddySS!

I've been running the BFG KD's and like them a lot.
For brakes I've been running Hawk performance pads on power slot rotors. They work pretty well but are VERY dusty.

I would imagine any pad with slotted rotors would be VERY dusty.

The original pads Mike Grasso put on were what he called "police pursuit pads". I assume they were fairly hard and there was VERY little dust. but he told me there was no civilian equivalent. I think some of the more expensive pads are better with dust than the cheaper and softer ones.

Keep in mind the the higher performance brake pads are softer and work better (offer more grip)at higher temperatures. Generally this is accomplished with the use of a softer compound in the pad, which produces far more dust and the pad will simply not last as long. Unfortunately, we can't have our cake and eat it too! [Frown] If we choose a a high performance brake pad, we will end up spending more time cleaning our wheels [Eek!]

Best regardSS,

Elie

I have found that the stock pads are terrible for lappng/solo I. The pad material cracked both vertically and hoizontally through the pad material. However, they do not dust much and are good for the street as long as they do not get too hot.

I have used Delco Durastops (Red). I like these pads for street and track. They work well when cold and will handle moderate race track fun. They are also moderately priced, however, they dust a lot. These are on the car now.

I have used Hawk HPPlus pads as well. These are adequate for street and good for race track (lapping/solo I). However, they must be bedded in properly to work on the track. I was not able to do this once and I noticed they did not stop as well with some fade at higher temperatires. There was also evidence of glazing on the rotor. I have used them in the winter (Toronto) and noticed that they take a split second to start to grip. I had to resort to more pedal effort to get them to grip. They also dust a lot and are more expensive then the durastops.

I have a set of Porterfields sitting in the garage. These came recoomended by a SLP rep at a SLP Customer Appreciation day a couple of years ago (Detroit area). He is an ex-racer. They are not supposed to dust as much as other pads, work well on the track (and street) and last longer. They are expensive though. They will go on the car once I sort out a reasonably priced two piece rotor. I am thinking of having some top hats made.

BTW, I agree with Elie's observation that the higher the performance a pad has, the more it dusts. I am hopeful that the Porterfields will be the exception to this "rule".

At least on the vettes, people haven't been happy with the durastops. They claim they wear quickly and eat rotors.

I'm happy with Performance Friction Z Rated pads. They dust a lot on the track, but calm down on the street after a while. This is on a C5 though.

I have a set of Performance friction pads on the front of my car(now the 68), and was very happy with the operation on track days. However, they dust a TON, and take a second to start working in cold/wet conditions.

I used Carbotech panthers on the SS at the track. They were very good but like everyone says, they dust a lot. So, I take them off when I get back from the track.

I just ordered a set for the Z06 and will try them with stock rotors at Watkins Glen in May. I will put them on jsut before I leave for NY and take them off when I get back.
