I wasn't going to post anything about this, because I know this is a Camaro chat site.. but I lost my Grandfather on Friday to a sudden massive heart attack.

It has been a very long weekend after getting a call from the K.C. police department Friday night. My grandfater apparantly thought he had heartburn or indegestion and drank pepto bismol at 10:00am and at 11:00ish he couldnt get off the floor, but my grandmother felt it might pass and kept trying to get him up to his bed. Finally at 3:30 or so, my grandfater mouthed "get me help" to her.. and she didn't understand what he wanted.. at 4:00 after 30 full minutes of being unconscience.. she called 911.. the ambulance arrived and he had been dead for over 1 hour.

It's hard for me to deal with the fact that the doctor said he could have almost definately been saved had it been for some help. My grandmother has some psychological issues and we aren't sure what the next phase of her life is going to be like.

What's worse.. they have been living off of social security and having their savings depleted yearly over the last 20 years. They have a completely paid for home that appraises quite nicely.. thus also giving them a huge tax bill that is higher than they get each year from social security alone. This has eaten away at nearly their entire savings.. requiring my Mom, sister and I to pay almost entirely cash for the funeral. What's worse.. my grandparents don't have any medical or home insurance of any kind.
Their home is completely unprotected.

My grandfather was the smartest man I knew.. but like so many times people say.. I wish I could have spent more time with him.. and his leaving this earth will be tough on my entire family.

Thanks for listening guys.

J.R.

Hey JR, ...so sorry to hear about your grandfather. There aren't words that I or anyone can say that will take away the loss you feel, yet may you find comfort in celebrating his life with the memories you've shared and that he's now at peace in a better place.
..our thoughts and prayers to you and your family.
God Bless...

My Gramps lived to a nice old age of 95. I lost him almost 2 years ago and there isn't a day that goes by that I don't think of him. He was one of the strongest influences in my life and I miss his wisdom & advice.
I know how you're hurting and my thoughts are with you.

As Hawkeye, poSSum and many others say on this board all the time - take the time to spend time with family and freinds. And as I my Irish grandmother used to say - "you'll never learn younger".

Sorry...all the best. [Frown]

Sorry to hear that JR. I lost my grandfather last May to a heart attack. He was doing some repairs to the bathroom at their home. He fainted in the living room and the paramedics did not make it in time to save him.
My grandmother is not in good health but has been living at their home. Luckily my uncle lives nearby and is able to check on her frequently.
Anyway, it is extremely difficult to lose someone so close to you but you have a lot of friends here.

Sorry to hear about your loss, JR. I lost my grandfather two years ago, just before Christmas and just before my first daughter, his first great-grandchild, was born. My sympathies to you and your family.

My sympathies [Frown] Hopefully you were able to visit him recently and that the time you've spent together leaves you with fond memories for years to come.

About the house...situations like that get me fuming...it ticks me off when someone has worked their entire life to own their home and end up losing it because of property taxes. [Mad]

Sorry to hear about your loss. Perhaps you've already done these things... but we've had some similar experiences with my parents... after the dust settles, you might check to make sure your grandmother is taking advantage of any property tax relief for seniors (if available where you are). Many seniors don't, due to lack of info, or misplaced pride. Also, a "reverse mortgage" might help with the house... we set one up ourselves for my parents, and it worked out well for all. Local Office on Aging, or similar, can be a great resource. Maybe you're already doing things like this... I don't mean to interfere... but some folks are not familiar with the resources available for our grandparents... and parents. Good luck.

Sorry for your loss. You are his legacy... it is up to you to keep his memory alive, as I'm sure you will.

Take the time to comfort your grandmother. It is the most difficult time in her life I'm sure. Loosing a spouse is like loosing a huge piece of yourself. She lost alot of her identity, and probably feels guilty given the circumstances. Hang in there.
