I don't usually post, but I thought you guys would have the best info for me. My SS is a daily driver with 18,200 miles and already I need rear tires. I have the original 275/40-17 Goodyear Eagle F1 GS, and if they wear out this quickly, I don't think I want to replace them with the same tire. What tires do you use and/or recommend.

Only the rear tires are worn bad? The Goodyear Eagle F1 has a treadwear rating of 300. That is not bad.Some of those "sticky" tires will have a treadwear rating of a whole lot less.

The front tires are wearing too, but not as bad as the rear ones. I didn't think I would have to replace tires this soon. I got 30k from tires on my '98 Z28
Any suggestions?

Seems that a lot of people like the BF Goodrich tires as replacements.Did you keep the tires at the recommended tire pressure? Rotated when they were supposed to? I got almost 60,000 miles on the original Goodyear GSC's that came on my 1997 30th Anniversary Z28. They are worn,but far from bad.

I've heard good things about the BFG KDW's...good wear and better traction than the F1's.

Great to see you post!! Doing burnouts to wear the rears that fast?
What do you use your car for. Just basically street daily driving? There are different tires for different purposes.
I have Comp T/A on the car for everyday use. They are mounted on my chrome rims.
When I want spirited driving, I put my original rims on with my KD's. The point I am trying to make is different tires for different purposes.
Check out www.tirerack.com and read the reviews about tires in our sizes. They will tell you about performance vs rain vs all season vs wear etc.
I got about 30K out of my original Goodyears. I was easy on them and it was a daily driver.

Well, let me tell yah, I actually bought new tires less than a month ago and, depending on your budget, I bought the Firestone Firehawk SZ50 Ep's. I have read tons of reviews and ratings and they ARE the best in that price range. I think SLP might still have them on sale cheaper than tirerack.com.
Since the month I had them on, they are totally awesome in the wet weather, and I have heard the same from other enthusiasts. They hook very well, at least on the street. I have never dragged the car...yet.
Cornering ability on these tires are great. You have a nice feel for the road and doesnt give you a false sense of security. I can't tell you about the noise, but heck! we drive Camaros and I have the loud mouth exhaust. I have no complaints about these tires. Takes a good 100+ miles to break them in, and then they get better.
My stock goodyears lasted only about 12k miles on the rears and I had an accident a year ago and had 2 tires replaced so I can't tell you what the wear was like on the front of the Good Years, although the outer edge wore really bad.
Good luck in whatever you get. I spent hours on end looking up tires and compairing them as I'm anal like that, and wanted the best for the money. I do drive on the agressive side... once in a while. Take Care! ~Dan

I only got about 20,000 out of my stock F1's and I was easy on them. No burnouts, etc. Other than over/under inflation, failure to rotate, bad alignment, etc., the biggest reason for premature wear is bad road surface. Concrete surfaces wear your tires faster than asphalt. Roads with poor surfaces or bad potholes wear tires even faster and gravel or dirt roads are killers for tire life.
Since a lot of my driving comes on poorly maintained concrete surfaces, the tires on cars that I drive wear out faster than people with different driving locations.
I hated my Goodyears. I got the BF Goodrich GForce KDW and they are great tires. They are lasting well too. I have also heard great things about the Firestones that Dan P. refers to. And as Dan A. said, check out tirerack for the comparisons. I got KDW instead of KD because I drive in rain.

Thanks for your comments and suggestions. I knew I could count on you guys.
My SS is a daily driver (rain or shine), back & forth to work, weekend fun, vacations, etc. I think I'm an average driver but have been accused of having a lead foot. I keep the tires at the proper inflation and have them rotated every 6K, so I really am not pleased with the Goodyear F1's treadwear.
Thanks Dan P - I've looked on tirerack.com and I was impressed with the Firestone Firehawk also. Glad to hear your thoughts on them - it's always better to hear from someone who actually has them on their car. Also liked the BFG KDW's.
I'm hoping to get through Summer before I have to actually buy the new tires. I should be able to get another 3 to 4K out of them. So I will have time to consider your suggestions and also put away the $$$. Thanks

BTW, the wear on the outside edge of the front tires is a function of the stock alignment settings. These cars are set up with a slight amount of POSITIVE camber, and to top it off the suspension gains positive camber as it is compressed. The end result is a higher loading on the outside edge of the tire.
I believe the alignment is set that way to ensure the onset of terminal "safe" understeer. The positive camber gain is a function of the upper A-arm mounting point not being in-board enough, and is a limitiation due to the platform originally being designed for a MacPherson strut set-up.

Hi. I started with a set of the firehawks and after driving so many outher tires there pretty low on my list. Great wet traction but leave a lot to be desired for dry traction in my opinion. I had the F1's for a while i have to say they were the worst. The KDW's i had were great but i was able to wear them out pretty quick. Im riding Dunlop SP sport 9000 right now not a bad tire low road noise good wet traction, ok dry traction. But not high on my dependability list. I have to say the best tire for price and drive that i have used is the nitto 555. My roommate works for Discount Tire co. So i've had a lot of opportunity to try diffrent tires. At really good prices too. Well thats my info. good luck.
