The last reply I had read was that the Camaro/Firebird are on hiatus at the moment and there aren't any plans at the moment on bringing it back but its not to say that these cars are gone for good.

Look at the Monte Carlo and Malibu. Even though these cars are front wheel drive they were brought back and there are talks of making the Monte rear drive again.

I would say that the F-Bodies are just on a rest and will be brought back fresh faced and still rear wheel drive in a few years. The General won't let the Junkstang runaway with the musclecar segment.

Last thing I heard was a news article by one of the folks running Chevy that the engineers were still looking for a new platform.
I'm thinking some of what happens in the Camaro situation will be tied to what happens when they start selling the new GTO.
I still think they'll look a lot alike if the GTO sells well.
It only makes good sense. That Sigma platform is being used a lot and something along the lines of the GTO would solve a few of the problems GM had with the F-body. Like size and weight, but still keep the rear wheel drive and V-8.

That is good news Voiceguy. Personally I think both cars will be back in a few years. The way things are changing at the General, Performance is one of their goals and with the Camaro/Firebird they know these two cars are vital to keeping them in the Musclecar Arena.

With my Brother working for GM I will let you al know when and if these babies will be back. [Big Grin] [Wink] [Cool] [Smile]

I'm not holding my breath. This months Car Craft has an item on the new Malibu SS. It's a "Ricer", with the 3.5L V6 from the Honda Odyssey Mini Van. A front wheel drive 5 door hatch back. If this is what GM thinks the "SS" belongs on then it looks to me like they have finally cut their own throat. It all just makes me very sad!! There was a time when I would have been happy with just about any Chevy on the lot, now there are only one in the entire GM line up, the Vette.

I don't think we can just assume that Scott S. was blowing smoke when he implied that the Camaro will be back...I believe him because I think both he and GM have a lot invested in the goodwill generated by Camaro and Firebird owners. I think having the new GTO will placate some of the Firebird people (although I still think it needs a GTO hood scoop and real dual pipes) but there nothing here or planned in the Chevy lineup that we know of that will take the place of the Camaro, and it's too big a brand to just let go.
I cannot see why chevy doing something with the existing Sigma platform and existing powertrains wouldn't be a good idea. Another variation on the Holden...a little more testosterone maybe...not quite so Euro...with an LS-6 in the front end...as the GTO will have next time round. I think females would buy it! And that was a major problem, I think, with the F-bodies...not enough female buyers. it would also be inexpensive because it could be done with parts already in stock, and still look new. It would be the first stock Camaro with independent suspension!
Any other ideas?

I believe the concept SS vehicle being shown around the country at the Auto Shows and also being printed in Road & Track a month or two ago is an early glimpse of what is to come with the next generation Camaro/Firebird. Even though it is shown as a four door alot of the styling cues will be taken from this vehicle and perhaps a variation of the 430HP engine plant that is in there now could in some way fit into the 5th gen.

Independent suspension is a distinct possibility and may not be ruled out and as for the female gender, I believe they again will purchase the "New" F-Body. They may not have felt the styling was very good on the 4th Gen but this is my opinion only and could be wrong. I am sure the ladies of this community can give you a better picture on how they feel about the styling. [Big Grin]

Sounds to me like the process is in effect then if my reading between the lines is right. [Smile]

The Camaro/Firebird platforms were a winner and GM knows this but unfotunately with all the competition out there and alot of these kids getting into the subcompact market along with the aftermarket products out there, hurt the F-Bodies immensley.

In the back of the minds of the General and this is my opinion only I think they realized that they lost control of the musclecar market and didn't realize the significance of this. I believe they have opened their eyes and are tailoring the next generation back towards the market they lost which should get the approval of the younger generation as well as our generation. The next F-Body will be a winner to everyone. [Big Grin]

I think it's great that there are so many positive opinions about the return of a great brand.
Somewhere in the informed comments lies a germ of truth.
September is coming and we'll see how the GTO does in the marketplace. I think it'll do OK...350 hp and 365 torque! (BTW it DOES have full dual pipes...sorry 'bout that).
I've seen some of the sketches that might be the new Camaro in Motor Trend and other places and some of them look pretty good.
We'll see...

There are many many Camaro/Firebird fanatics out there that are hoping for the return of these pony cars, and someday it will return. With all the respones people have given in forums such as this or in letters to GM and even petitions signed at Camaro Shows. GM knows the car will sell but they have to make one where it will attract the buying public like it once did.

I have seen retro sketches of an up and coming new Camaro and some have the flavor of 1969. Could this be the new Camaro? Would definately be cool. [Big Grin] [Cool]
