Can anyone tell me what size engine was put in the IROC's.I was discussing this with a friend at work,I thought they were 305's,he seem's to think they were 350's.Also were they fuel injected or carburated? Also what transmission were they equipped with?Any reply would be appreciated.

Depends what year.... 305 Tune Port was the base engine you could get with an auto or 5 speed (rare). The 350 was only avail with the shush box... it also was a Tuned Port Motor (TPI). For some reason I even think one year you could get the TBI (toilet bowl injection AKA throttle body injection) which was a 305. No 3rd Gen IROC came with a carb... the early Z 84? I think had a slobber jet... later it switched to crossfire then after that it was stricly injected.... its late and I'm too lazy to look in one of my many camaro books.... [Big Grin]

The IROC-Z was available with the LG4 and LB9 Engines which were 305's in 1985 and 1986. In 1987 The 350 became available for the first time since 1981 which was in the Z-28. The 305 was detuned from 215hp in 1985 to 190hp in 1986 in anticipation of the reintroduction of the 350 but that was pushed back until 1987. That was rated at 225hp. Only 50 1986 IROC-Z's were built with the 350, but these cars were like COPO's in a sense as they were not identified like the regular 1986 IROC-Z. They were plain jane and made out West.. There is a website for the IROC-Z.
http://www.iroc-z.com/

This should help you out with any information you need, plus the Camaro White Book can also help you out.

Engine Codes: RPO LG4 Carburated ( 305 )
RPO LB9 TPI ( 305 )
RPO B2L TPI ( 350 ) ( available on 1987 to 1990 models ).

Hope this helps.

Also, the L69 305 HO carb motor was also available in IROCs for '86. The above IROC web site states that only 74 were built, which makes it kinda rare. Last of the carb'd cars ...

Hi there!
I owned an '86 IROC for 3 years. I just bought a little early. The '87 could be had with the 350 but you still had to have the slushbox!
Mine was a TPI 305 auto. Black/silver. T-Tops, leather...all options. But low 190hp! My buddy (and SSOA member) Dave Stokes in Pickering ON had an '84 305HO...he could beat me!!! Now he has a '97 SS...wins awards!
To me, there is NO comparison between the 3rd gen and 4th!
By the way, I wanna tell you, those gaterbacks were terrible in the wet!!!! I think they were the first widely available uni-directional high perf tires.

Hi Voiceguy,

I own an 86 IROC with the 305 TPI rated at 190hp. I was a little early as well ordering mine as I heard that Chevrolet was going to be installing the 350 but unfortunately it didn't happen nationwide. Only 50 were produced out West and were plain jane. I don't know if any of these cars still exist or not.

It is also stated that 2 cams were available that year. One more rigorous than the other and rated at 205hp. The information is stated in the site I provided above. All that people have to do is check where the it starts to redline and I believe it said at either 5000 or 5500 rpm and that should show if the rigorous cam is installed. I have to check and see on mine. I have owned it for 17 years and just have over 9900 original miles. [Big Grin]

I believe what happened with the 305 TPI in '86 was that GM used the cam from the carb'd LG4 motor, which clipped the HP but boosted torque. Something to do with passing emissions as I recall. In '87, the LG4 was dropped and the cam 305 TPI cam grind was changed again, putting the 305 back over 200HP.

I had an '84 L69 w/3.73s. It was one heck of a combination for its day. Nothing like the LS1, but hey, it was the 80s! [Smile]

Thanks for the info Randy. Mine came equipped with the 3:23 rearend with the G92 performance ratio. To me it seems to corner better than my SS. Can't beat the SS for performance though. But I love both cars the same. [Big Grin] [Cool]

Interesting! I still own an 84 Z28, that I bought new. As I purchased it specifically to race, so I special ordered it. No AC, no power, 3:73 posi, 4 wheel disc, but all the HD stuff they had that year(alt., cooling, etc.). I also got the sport seats, aka Recaro's. These have got to be the best seat ever installed in any GM vehical. Adjustible side, lumbar, head, thigh, and bolsters. As I knew I would be changing the engine I ordered it with the LG4 and the 5 speed. They didn't "clip" the HP, It just didn't have any. I have a "time slip" some where that say it only ran high 16's in the 1/4. Anyway, it's all better now.

I checked my IROC for the more rigorous cam via the tachometer listing and found out I have the less rigorous one. Its okay though I still love my baby. [Big Grin] [Cool]
