I just picked up some cool motorola radios... anyways they transmit over 5 miles but it says I have to register them and get a FCC license for 75 bucks! Whats that all about.... does anyone out there have these type of radios and did you register... wish the package would have said how much it was to register! The dummy at circuit city said it was only 15 bucks!

I have a set of the FRS/GRS radios. But since most folks only have FRS, I've never been on the GRS channels yet. FRS channels will still only have a 2 mile range. The GRS channels will have a 5 mile range. I don't plan on getting a license for mine.

My Corvette club used to use CB's & FMS till we got fed up with them and took the big step and got real bus. band radios from Motorola. We worked with a dealer and are licensed and have our own freq. Go for the license it is good for 10 years so you are only talking about a few bucks a year. GMRS is not as good as your own freq. but if you are in any kind of populated area or event the added freq. are worth their weight in gold! Just my .02. By the way the odds of being caught by the FCC is very very small with a low powered hand held but they have been known to visit large gatherings such as races car shows etc. and the fine if caught can be up to $5,000.00 dollars per day per radio per radio. If anyone tells you this never happens talk to a commercial radio dealer and he will tell you some horror stories. The FCC has changed from a Governmental Regulatory agency into a revenue producing one over the last several years.

I just recently bought a 7 mile GMRS/FRS from Cobra. I applied for the license first and reviewed risks on the fcc.gov site. I figured $75 was well worth the potential $5K fine and jail time described on the FCC site.

I have an amatuer radio license. I have a hand held radio that has FRS frequencies. Works great. Pass the license test and I think it is only 10 bucks!

The amatuer radios license has the added advantage of having multiple bands/frquencies available to licensed operators.
