I read or heard that all gas starts off the same. Gas companies then add additives to make their gas different. Does anyone know if there has been a national test of gas stations to see who sells the best premium unleaded? I don't want any problems anytime soon with my 02 sensors and catalytic convertors. I'm thinking REAL GOOD gas would lengthen the life of those parts...has to be true to some extent but I don't know how much. I normally use Mobil, Exxon or Shell 93 octane. Any recommendations? Thanks.

I use the cheapest I can find. And what about those stations that use one pump for all three grades? Whats still in the hose from last time? ( Not that it makes any difference!)

Brands don't mean a whole lot. In my previous life as a consultant to many different petro-chemical companies, I used to see competetor's tankers leave the refineries on a regular basis. The additives are, more or less, the same or very similar. The only bad gas I am aware of is old or dirty (eg. water, particles) gas. Choosing a station that has low prices usually results in a constantly replenished inventory, therefore good gas. This is one of the few things where I believe buying cheap is a good thing.

I only use Chevron (out west) and Mobil (when I'm back east).... There is a difference the no name stuff is junk since they skip on the additives but all the name brand stuff is probably the same.....

Guess they think its more efficient..money wise. My lil bro works at a wawa gas place, and tries to empty the rest of the gas out of the nozzel before pumping(not that it does anything), but the less low level gas going into my tank the better Posts: 146 | From: Galloway, NJ | Registered: Aug 2003

I have to agree with JeffY. My friend ran his Vette at Sac. raceway on Chevron's finest, Shell's finest, Arco's finest, and whatever else happened to be convenient. The results? Consistant high 11's every time within a hundredth or two of each other. No sputtering or reduced MPH, ET, 60'. I suppose anything's possible. But I doubt there's any tangible difference between the cheap gas and high end gas. Whether that be in relevance to performance or internal engine parts.
Just my observations... Posts: 25 | From: Manhattan Beach, Ca. | Registered: Jul 2002

It really doesn't matter where you get your gas from. My girlfriends dad is in charge of a refinery close to Chicago. From what he told us gas stations buy from the closest refinery because it would make no sense shipping from a BP Amoco refinery to a BP Amoco gas station 5 states away when you can buy from a Shell refinery that is closer and save on shipping. So when you really think that the Shell gas you're getting is Shell gas, in all reality it may be Speedway, Shell, Phillips, Citgo, etc. I never knew this before he told me, I always thought that when I was passing up a Speedway and going to a Shell or Amoco I was doing my engine good but in reality, all I did was waste money.

Many, many people have had injector crud build up and sediment in their tanks build up from using Arco fuel...faster than what is considered normal.
I won't take that chance....

I've got a similar story to those, above. I stopped at a local gas station with my daily driver to get the cheapest gas price (it just happened to be Canadian Tire). I looked down the street I saw that the ESSO, Sunoco and Shell were all selling at higher prices. I asked the attendent why the difference between his price and the others. He laughed and said it was a mystery to him. He said the same tanker truck fills up all the gas stations on his street, so everyone is selling the same gas. Doing well, Pete. You? So far, So-Cal is the worst possible place on the planet. Gangs, violence, war, nuclear fallout, travelling death squads, Saddam Hussein, you name it, it's here. So everyone leave the area ASAP.
OK, now that everyone's gone, it's wayyyy better than I thought it would be. But I already went into that in the PM I sent you. Good to be here. Basically all you are doing is buying the rights to use the name of the Oil Company itself. My Dad use to work for a gas station long ago and that is what the owner told him. When the owner ran afoul with one of the oil companies himself he told them hey this is my station and if you don't like what I am doing I will change the name and switch brands no problem. The oil company backed down. So its just the name itself. Posts: 2841 | From: Westland, MI | Registered: Apr 2003
