Hello, Gentlemen. This semester I am getting involved with the SAE group at Texas A&M University. The club at the University will be working in conjunction with the senior design classes to build a formula car for a competition in the spring. Texas A&M placed 26th overall the last time we competed, and have one 1st place rating in the years we have been participating. We are beginning to look for sponsors, and I was wondering if General Motors and SLP might be interested in sponsoring us this year. In the past, Ford has been a sponsor, as well as several major engineering companies in the Houston area, like Schlumberger and FMC. Some sponsors donate money, others donate materials, if either of you thinks that your respective employers might be interested, could you please provide me with contact information, so that I can pass it on to the guy in the SAE group at the university who is in charge of sponsors and funding? Thank you very much!

GM gets a little weird about sponsoring things.... plus in todays climate money is tight. I believe they sponsor the Michigan schools....

My son has been on Drexel's SAE team for 3 years. He's been to Pontiac each year and they were even invited to England 2 years ago and shipped the car over to compete in Europe. It is a great program! There are very strict regs. on sponsorships in order to keep the possibility of a student with a "rich" daddy from bankrolling the whole program at a level that the other schools could not compete with. Most of the schools have a very generous budget. One of the things you are judged on is the prospectus the team puts together for sponsors, most of the sponsors are local businesses. Brian Reese, SLP's engineer in Toms River, NJ, was involved with I tink it was Ohio States Team. It can be very time consuming but you will have a ball. My son enjoyed it so much that he and one of the other students started a fabrication company specializing in composites. He even got the school to let him do his last co-op with his own company.

Maybe he doesn't know?
Psst, JeffY is no longer with SLP.
Oh yeah, I knew that, but I thought there was something else possibly. Hoepe everything at SLP is going well.......

Yes, I know he's no longer with SLP. But he might know who I would have to speak to about it.

I gave you my answer in the first response. ( That was a sarcastic way of saying, don't bother.)

I'd love to help you, but as you can imagine, GM is constantly asked for sponsorships....and we actually have tens of thousands of them. The GM foundation reviews sponsorships such as yours two years out.......so I don't think there is a lot of hope for when you need this.
Interesting tidbit...we donated several thousand new cars last year to technical schools and high schools for automotive training......not sure of the exact number, but it was pretty high........

I picked up on the sarcasm, Jeff. Was your departure from SLP less than amicable? I was under the impression it was... ok, or is your response meaning something else?
Also, I thought you might also have some insight on people in General Motors who might be interested in sponsoring us, based on your years there.
BTW: What all are you doing these days? Are you going to retire (no offense, but you are getting up there in age, or just doing a Dorian Gray impression ), or try consulting, or are you looking for fulltime employment elsewhere?

Thank you, sir, I appreciate the response. Although any sponsorship would probably not be an immediate need, at A&M we are used to being under dogs, and working with what we have. If its not too much trouble, if you have any information on how to contact the GM Foundation, it would at least be something that might be beneficial to future aggies.

No, it was fine-just right now, things are tight in the auto industry. If GM and Ford can't give cars away ( 0% interest and all - next is buy one, get one free).
Also, I thought you might also have some insight on people in General Motors who might be interested in sponsoring us, based on your years there.
Nope-too many people have changed.
BTW: What all are you doing these days? Are you going to retire (no offense, but you are getting up there in age, or just doing a Dorian Gray impression ), or try consulting, or are you looking for fulltime employment elsewhere? Looking, looking - can't retire for awhile.

Well, Jeff, its good to hear that things are ok all around. I hope you find something that you enjoy. Have you thought about looking outside the automotive world? You do have an aero degree, perhaps you could look to another industry, since the auto world is in such turmoil.
